I am in a whirlwind... One minute I want to be a Marine officer, the next minute I want to be a Ranger, the next an Army Officer, etc.. I think I'm going to get laid off soon. I need to have a plan. It's an opportunity to do what I've always wanted... serve my country. Only the Army and Marines appeal to me, sorry Sailors and Airmen out there. The option that has been my true preferred path from the get-go over two years ago is the 18X special forces enlistment option. Is this still available?

ok so you want to be an X-Ray huh? Do you know what it takes to be a candidate? I've served with the 1st Special Warefare Group at Ft. Bragg for 2 years and let me tell you...
X-Rays have the highest fail rate and usually end up as Weapons Sgts. You will have to go to BCT and then AIT for infantry. Then off to Airborne School for 3 weeks. Then off to Pre-SFAS training where you will learn some basics about land navigation and SF missions. This is to prepare you for SFAS. Candidates who fail to meet the standards in this phase are recycled or dropped completely depending on the Board's decision. Upon successful completion,off to SFAS. The toughest and most demading training you will ever experience, it's designed this way for a reason. You are the only motivation you have out there. You will go through the STAR navigation exercise which you will have to carry a ruck weighing over 60 lbs for over 18km and you will be under the clock. Keep in mind SFAS, special forces selection and assessment, is simply that. For the most part, we want you to make it and will do our best to help you achieve. Then as an X-ray you will go through Pre-Phase II to familarize you to Special Forces Tactics and briefly go over Situational Awareness and ofcourse, more land nav exercises. Then off to Phase II where you will be trained and assessed on small unit tactics, raids, ambush techniques, recon, etc. Once you pass phase II, the attrition rate drops dramatically. Most say that if you make it through phase II, you will earn your Beret. This is mostly true with the exception of the 18A series, the commanders.

18X is currently still available. The Army is really expanding the size of Special Forces right now so this is a good time to get in but who knows how long that will last. The new President is planning many Military cuts and 18X program cut be one of them. I would not procratinate for to long if I were you. |

18X will ALWAYS be open and will always have a very nice bonus, because the dropout rate and difficulty of becoming a special forces Soldier is huge.
It's at like 30k$ bonus right now, and you become an NCO once you finish all the way. You're looking at E6 in maybe 2-3 years of service if you can do it. Be aware if you drop out, you will become an infantryman though.
One way that may take longer if you are not interested in the infantry is to choose your job and apply once you are in, they recruit from within also. |

As far as I know, you have to be an NCO to go into Special Forces. That means you can not directly enlist in those MOSs. |
