Is BUD/S (Navy SEALs training) really as hard as people make it seem?

I understand the 70% drop out rate, and I understand how extremely difficult the training is, but it just looks like most other special forces training. And about the drop out rate, it seems there would be a high drop out rate since it's the Navy. Not anything against the Navy, but it's not a land combat branch, and I think most of the guys going to BUD/S are just bored sailors who don't know what they're getting in to. If SEALs were apart of the Marine Corps or the Army would they have a lower drop out rate? And finally, if you can pass indoc does that mean you physically have what it takes for the rest of training? It seems after you pass indoc the drop outs are caused from mental strain.

I've read Lone Survivor, and the training sounds like a lot of the stuff you go through in most military training. But that's probably my favorite book.

Yes it is,

You have to understand, the people who qualify for Bud/s, are already in better shape than most Soldiers or Marines are, before they start training.

What makes it tough, is you do not just have to maintain the high level of physical exertion for a couple of hours, like most other high speed units, but you have to keep that exertion up up for 14 to 16 hours every day, day in and day out.

Nope, it doesn't mean you physically have what it takes.

It just means you physically have what it takes to start training.

But if you have looked at any seal webpage, you see the distances keep getting longer and longer and the times keep getting lower and lower thruout the entire training.

You have to constantly run faster, run further, swim faster, swim further than you did the week before.

That having to give 100% effort every single day, is what causes people to DOR

I think they could lower their drop rate if they did not allow people to DOR. If you have no choice but to make it through, you tend to make it. Then again, maybe they are looking for people that know they can quit but don't.

Hmmmm
read the book "lone survivor" by marcus lutrell.he tells all about becoming a SEAL and the mission he participated in afghanistan.if you come away with anything but admiration you are a dip.

Nope, its not as hard as people think...
It is HARDER...

May I ask how you came across all of
that great information on why the drop
out rate is so high ???

It is so hard as to do what it is doing...
Separating the "Wheat from the Chaff"...

You either is a "Bad A*s Mothur or You Ain't"...
If you can't take the Mental Strain it is far better
you break in Training then in Combat...

It is the same in all Special Warfare Training
in ALL Services...the Cream always comes to the TOP...

i think part of the high drop out rate its due anyone can try out for it.. unlike most special forces that requires to be in the service and being at least an NCO and some time on your collar.

they get so many civilian wannabes that never done anything related to the military and because the Navy knows that most of them are going to FAIL and fill their quotas with jobs that nobody wants..lol plus its one of the hardest training in the military period.

i am pretty sure that because the marines are a part of the navy that they can become seals. not positive but pretty sure

warhog
Yeah. its harder. Even AIR force is like death penealty but MArines are the top notch for a reason people die just in training. but thats why they are who they are.
