Is China going to be the next super power?

China is quickly becoming the 900 pound gorilla in the world. They are poised both industrially and militarily to move into second place.

soon? they're already a super power! I sure wouldn't want us to go to war with China! look how much trouble we're having with Iraq! look how much trouble we had with Vietnam! if we went to war with China, we'd be in BIG trouble!

The next war is going to be waged in the financial markets. China is already positioned to collapse the US economically. You can take over the world without flattenting a country.

China already IS a superpower and somebody to be reckoned with. China is already opening up to foreign markets from the West and especially American companies are also foaming at the mouth trying to get a peice of the financial pie.

There is the potential. It's a scary concept though.

I don't think we will have an election on it, but, China has already been a super power. It is what a country decides to do with power when they get it, that make it super in a good way or in a controlling way. The jury is still out on China. Many weapons found in Iraq, Lebanon, or Afghanistan have been made in China or Russia. I have not seen any evidence of China wanting power for good yet.

"The" Super Power? As in THE top Super Power?

They almost are. I don't know what you consider as soon but I don't think it is unreasonable to think that it could happen within the next decade. They are biding their time very patiently and other than our current Administration I don't think the majority of Americans are paying attention.

As long as we Americans have our heads up our proverbial butts and keep bickering amongst ourselves we are handing it to them.

You can give me all the thumbs down you want. The truth is out there for anyone to see. Economically, Militarilly and Politically they are making huge strides all the time. What are we counteracting that with? A large percentage of our population believes that it is somehow fashionable to undermine our President and posh to fight the government every step of the way. We are doing it to ourselves. Enjoy it folks, it is going to be your future. I'll be pushing up daisies when it happens.

it may happen. far as i know some people very in to politics said that china will be the next super power,,,and a lot of the nanny of rich and influent people are chines...so that the children's can learn the language too.

While I see China becoming an economic super power I don't see it becoming a military super power. The reason is that the Chinese have not been procuring ships and planes that project power on a global scale only on a regional scale. This was one of the biggest faults of the soviets their military reach was limited by it's lack of a large transport command. They had big planes but not enough of them and few supply ships and worse still no real carriers ever made it to the fleet. If china starts building carriers and a large logistics force than watch out they will use it because such forces are too expensive not to use.

because of their sheer size the Chinese are quickly beconing an economic super power. Their military is large and rapidly advancing. However to achive superpower status they will need to develop the ability to project power beyond their immediate borders. If they do develop the ability to strategically deploy forces worldwide like we can, then they will be truly scary.

I live in Thailand, and judging from its influences, yes. Maybe even earlier than 2050. USA is somewhat bogged down by the instabilities it had created in parts of the world.

China has always managed to reach its status without a single bullet. Violence doesn't prove anything. As a consequence of America's influences around the world, especially the Middle East, it has lost much political credibility.

I would not judge the U.S. military prowess on Vietnam and Iraq. Those were and are guerrilla-style wars, which is not a style the U.S. military is set up to fight. The U.S. military is designed to be highly mobile and strike from a distance, a strategy that is impossible when the cowardly enemy uses civilians as shields. Add to that the fact that we have had to fight wars on two fronts, abroad and at home(against the media and the anti-war crowd), and you see that victory would be very difficult to achieve.
But in provoked open warfare versus an enemy state, America is still by far the strongest military.(How many days did it take to capture Baghdad?) But why would we want to fight China? They are our largest trade partner.

To answer the askers question - yes, as long as the Chinese do not revert to Socialist practices, and continue to embrace open markets and somewhat free trade, they will continue to prosper.
