Yes... I think you are right on that. Unfortunatelly, the violence in Iraq does not seem to be over soon.

Exactly as you are saying, it is a second Northern Ireland to the Brits and a second Vietnam to the Americans.

The conflicts above all dragged many years, with countless blood spills, and most of all, they all gained nothing.

Another depressing news is, I do not think neither the Americans nor the Brits are planning to evacuate their forces in near future.

The reason for that is, if they leave right now, the key oil infrastructure in Iraq will be on the insergents' hands, and by the absence of the super powers "policing" the area for re-building nations and stability will not be achieved. In other words, it will create a power vacuume.

I do not know if the Brits end up fighting in Iraq for next 25 years, but one thing for certain; it will take many years (at least 5 years?) with rain-pouring money spent, and more and more blood spills- all to gain nothing.

How can you compare the action in Northern Ireland with something like Iraq.
The action in Ireland was mainly peacekeeping,and trying to prevent the Catholics from killing Protestants,and of course catching those who were bombing London and other Cities.
Iraq is different because the main reason for the attack was to get rid of Sadam and stop him killing so many civilians also,he issued a direct threat to the west,threatening a mass killing of as many westerners as possible,he,was going to finance an all out war on the west as well,do not forget his invasion of Kuwait.
What is needed now is to stabilise Iraq and this will take some time and, as someone has pointed out the British Forces will be leaving soon.

Will American Forces be bogged down in a war they can not win for the next 10 yrs by getting involved in other countires business? Trying to push democracy on those that do not want it. Why dont we leave the Iraq's alone and let them solve their own problems (but now we can ruined their country and have to spend billions to fix it). Why do we keep butting in. All that money could have been spent securing our borders and keeping the terrorists out of our country.
I am sorry Britain got lured into a war we can never win. Just remember not all Americans were behind this attack. There are plenty of us who are fighting mad.

There is no comparison between Iraq and NI
Firstly you should study your history.The British were actually invited into Ireland.They did not invade the country with the aim of getting rid of the governing power.
A majority of people in NI wish to remain governed by the British Parliament.
A majority of Iraqis want the coalition forces out as they now feel they are doing more harm than good.
It would appear from recent reports that both the US and British govts have finally realised what a massive mistake they have made.
Bush and Blair have continually said they would "stay the course until the job is done".
I would not be surprised if the coalition forces were not out within 12-18 months without completing the job.Although they will never admit it.

the brits haven't actually claimed iraq for their own... so not the same problem getting out. if the situation become inconvenient for them, you can trust the soldiers will be returned home ASAP. right now there is obviously a benefit to being involved.

I don't think so. The Six Counties is and has been occupied by the British for hundreds of years. There has been an on going fight for freedom against this occupation. I am glad that it has now directed itself towards a political rather that a military solution to the occupation.

The only reason the Six Counties "blew up" as it did was because the artificially created sectarian state went all out to keep the catholic population as second class citizens. Derry is the best example of this. A Catholic majority and only one nationalist MP returned to three unionist. The city was divided up so that would always be the case.

I don't believe that the British Army will be stuck there for years. But how can they leave the oil. After all that is what they went there for! Democracy has nothing to do with it!
