Is John McCain dreaming? Building up our military WITHOUT a draft?
|
Despite his rhetoric about how "good" it is to serve our country, how is McCain planning on meeting his military goals without a draft?
He acknowledges that if we had followed Shinzeki's advice and put more boots on the ground--rather than "go with the military you have and not the military you *wish* to have" (Rumsfeld's answer to one soldier's question back in late 2004)--we wouldn't be in such a pickle as we are now: with a stretched and strained military fighting on two fronts (and with Iran added to the mix? Three.)
But now McCain wants to "boost" our military's fighting strength and he wants to do it fast to combat what he sees as a "malicious" enemy. (One that we can't see or identify--naturally. But we must be "ready".)
But *without* the draft.
So how does he plan on doing it? Wave a magic wand? Bribes? Extortion?
Given what we've seen so far in Iraq, I don't see anyone else signing up in droves to serve. Do you? Additional Details http://news.yahoo.com/s/bloomberg/20080402/pl_bloomberg/amzorlmjbisq

Hi
 |
the only way more people would want to join the military is if you increase pay/benefits. |

The military was huge until a mere 15 yrs ago and there is no reason it cant be expanded back to a more reasonable level all by volunteers just as it was then. If you do not want to join then dont but dont try to write off a plan that you know nothing about simply because you dont like the military. We can double our numbers over time all with volunteers- no real problem |

Well the military has already been increased by over 60,000 soldiers since 2003.
So it is not that hard to do.
The current plan, already authorized, calls for a total Army expansion of 80,000 and a Marine expansion of 20,000.
So whats the problem, we seem to be meeting the recruiting gaols easily enough. |

Every branch of the military has met or exceeded its recruiting and retention goals every year since the attack on America of September 11, 2001. The source below is a link to a site where you can get the figures for February. Just click on "news releases" and look for the one issued in early March.
You can also use the same site to check the figures for March next week. |

Money, the same way they get more garbage men.
The only one who wants a draft is Charles Rangle and people who want to relive the '60s |

Why not? Ronald Reagan did it in the 1980s. |

Well Sky
I've done my time and if I could have stayed longer I would have. Everyone should serve their country everyone. I do not support a draft but mandatory two year enlistment upon graduation from High school for everyone then if you go to college two more.
No Draft but Mandatory Compulsory Service |

Well, I live in San Diego and there are tons of military here. They obviously aren't all in Iraq so if they need more, there are many available that have joined by choice. |

We already are building it up without a draft. That is why they are allowing waivers for things. Once we reach the numbers we need, the waivers will go away.
All branches have been meeting thier goals. The reason the Army was having some problems was because the Army's end strength was raised by 70,000. If the raise was not ordered by Congress already, the Army would have been making mission also. Even with the raise, they are still making the mission. The Army is on track to have that additional 70,000 by 2010, as ordered by Congress.
On top of that, re-enlistments are way over required numbers. In other words, people who join stay.
So yes, people are joining up, and those in are staying in. Maybe they are not joining up in your town, but they are in other places.
On the otherhand, the Air Force is actually being shrunk, again as ordered by Congress.
Its all in the big picture. By 2010 the Army will have grown from 32 Brigades to 42 Brigades since 2006.
NIce spin. Too bad it lacks in both clarity and something called...REALITY. |

When Admiral Fallon recently retired, he made a comment that I found interesting. He said that it was unfortunate that he was retiring prematurely, because he wanted to be around when the US and China start holding joint operations.
Can you imagine that? The US and the Chinese Red Army holding joint military operations?
Maybe the globalist plan to use the Chinese Red Army to subdue Iraq and take Iran. |

my son and nephew both joined two years ago, things were pretty awful in 2006, if you remember. They both wanted to serve, my son will be home from his first deployment in Sept. my nephew will be home July. I don't care if they sign up in droves, quality not quantity. Better men choose to serve and defend their country, where ever that may take them. Others sit at home and ask questions. |

Well, a lot of people get denied from the military due to certain medical/criminal problems. I'm easing up on the DQ's will help, although I personally am against that.
Yeah, I am a little curious as to how he would do that as well. |

McCain has the draft on his mind as punishment when someone upsets him. See for yourself below what happened when a young man asked McCain the "too old" question. McCain said he's going to draft him.

A draft is not a joke or laughing matter. Hope the poor kid survives Iraq or Iran. |

I think it is a simple tactics that the Republicans want to buy votes from many Americans can't get a job in the US. Why don't join the army ? It pays good and many military personnel consider to join the military force is to get easy money, bonus, plus decent pension fund and honorary discharge payment after the completion of service. As what i mentioned once an US soldier in Iraq made about $15,000 US in the first month by buying and selling the Iraqi currency, he declared that he supported Bush in a billboard letter. The outcome will probably: If McCain get elected, he will make the US deficit up to ten trillion dollars for additional more military spending. The damn Regan did the same, too. Ten trillion US dollars can probably make a round trip of linked $100 US dollar bills from white house to the moon and back. For buying the votes, McCain use the same immoral proposal of Regan's without considering the harmful consequences that harm Iraq and US citizens. |

Maybe he'll give them even more money. I mean $20,000 bonuses isn't enough so let's give them $50,000. Then we can raise the age to join to 45 and let convicted felons with assaults or worse join. |
