Thy have the capability to be a military threat if they so choose, but what really matters is the intention. They're quite aggressive economically but they have no intention of launching any kind of military adventure. They're more interested in scewing the West for gas and oil sales than trying to take us over. |

There's been this nagging Brit vs Russian bashing thing going on since Ivan the Terrible.
The only Russian who ever impressed the British was Peter the Great - he worked as a shipwright at Deptford not far from where I live here in Greenwich - there's even a statue of him.
Russians are okay so too is Russia - stop worrying, the Russians have no plans to invade - not yet anyway.

I wouldnt think that Russia is a DIRECT threat anymore than we were to them during the Afghan war. I think now that they are selling all their technology and there really is no sense of patriotism that if there is anything truly threatening, our governments could pay off an informants. The Russians have to know that every ounce of technology that they have has been studied, reverse engineered and weaknesses noted. They can neither afford a war nor would the industry be able to keep up with the war effort. The days of carpet bombing a square mile to hit an outhouse are gone. With each bomb capable of destroying a building, the productions levels needed to keep up would be unreachable. |

militarily, we are more powerful than Russia - their armed forces are falling apart. (they have more nukes though) although the possibility of war is less than 1%.
in terms of espionage, britian has long had the best intellegience services in the world. russian security services are no threat when we have MI5/ SIS. also, the exact same thing will have happened in reverse - there is no doubt that russia is swamped with british spies. |

I really don't see how Russia is a threat when they are in talks with every country. I see economically how they are a threat with less than 20% taxes to fund a country. |

Well of course they are a threat, we are harbouring multi billionaires who could spill the beans on Mr Putins little tricks anytime, so we are probably more infiltrated now than ever. We cannot rely on the yanks really, its our asses not theirs. With the influx of thousands of eastern block workers, the collapse of border controls and the current 'why worry' attitude; we are probably 'All doomed' to quote a famous Dads Army vet. |

They are not. They will always be ruthless. General Patton said it best when he politically incorrectly stated they are a bunch of savage Mongols, having nothing in common with Europeans.
They are not a threat. They are just desperately poor and they think we, the Americans or you the English will pay attention to them. Also, their people are angry and who better to direct anger towards than America?
That is what happens in the utterly corrupt Muslim countries. The leaders blame their shortcomings on Israel and America. |

Russia has always been a threat, and always will be (until we kick their asses). I don't believe that they are a bigger threat than the cold war, though. There are more Russian spies now because we are spending less money on counter-espionage, and more on anti-terror operations. I think that America and the UK will realize that Russia is becoming even more powerful, and guard against them more efficiently.
Russia couldn't hurt Britain or America right now because:
1. Their navy and air force are shitty
2. They have massive internal problems
3. They can't invade western Europe anymore (no Warsaw pact to help them)
Their only option is their nuclear arsenal, and if they nuked us, we would nuke them (MAD), and they aren't that stupid
On the positive side, Russia and China hate each other, so it is more likely that they will fight each other (and hopefully kill each other) so that we can stop worrying about them |
