NO!!! I have been in the Marine Corps for 12 years and would not want to have to go to combat with people who do not want to be in the military. You would have discipline problems, a lot more drug use, and over all just more problems than you could deal with. The military is finding it more difficult to recruit people, but it still hitting its goals. There are enough people volunteering for military service so I see no need for a draft. |

Yes and no. Actually most countries you have to serve in the military for at least 2 year when you are eligible to do so. America is one of the few who don't. I know if it happened i would go. But no one really wants go to war, even those who sign up. its a horrible thing. On that note i would defend my country if i was called upon to do it. |

No. The military says they don't want it. They need specialized forces that have undergone technical training. Short-term conscripts would be a waste of resources, and reduce overall effectiveness. |

It hasn't proved to be so in the modern era, by that I mean Vietnam. Do we really want people in the armed services that don't want to be there, wouldn't that breed contempt? I know that some would argue that it would make people patriotic, but patriotism is something that you have or don't and not something that you acquire. |

I'd like to know why women aren't allowed to register for the draft. Sounds like gender discrimination to me. |

not at all.
wars are fought differently these days. the military needs people who WANT to be there, and have the skills necessary to fight the war. imagine how uneffective the military would be if it had a lot of soldiers who did not want to be there, or even know how to perform the skills nedded to fight?
the iraq war is unpopular enough as it is, and it would only get even more unpopular if the re enstate the draft.
a political expert on my local tv station last year said it is very unlikely that the bill to introduce it would even make it to the senate floor. |

It is when it's needed. Right now, it's not needed. |

Draft? Not a good idea. Most Americans would not accept it. There would be protests. Also, considering that Bush started the war in Iraq and that it has gone badly, a draft would represent a failure of this war to be won anytime soon. |

No, they should send all prisoners to fight our wars |

absolutely, I'd like to see all the illegal immigrants get drafted
and then realize what the USA is about and why we fight
to keep our Freedom the way it is. |

I agree with Nicolas C, that would be one way to get us out of this mess for sure, all these people who believe in bush and think he is so wonderful, would hate his sorry butt if they were drafted |

Yes it would cause one of the fastest pullouts in history. |

Yes, if the republicans had to send their own kids to Iraq instead of sending children from poor families, they would of ended the war (or perhaps never even started the war) years ago. |

I can't be drafted, so it doesn't really bother me any. But if they do start the draft, it should be for both men and women. |

Not if it can be avoided. Would you want someone protecting you that was made to, or wanted to? |

The lack of numbers in an all-volunteer military may necessitate the draft. It is a sign of desperation - if it does come back - that the armchair "warriors" in the executive and legislative branches of federal government have failed this nation and - sadly - its young people. |

National Service is a good idea. As an alternative to one of the Military services, many countries have offered Peace Corps, VISTA, police, fire dept, ambulance and hospital work, and other government agencies.
The point is that everyone should contribute, and the social skills and work ethics that you lean in the military or public service give 18 to 20 year olds a valuable head start.
I do not support sending draftees to fight overseas unless they volunteer. I believe the constitution provided conscription only to defend US territory against foreign invaders and we need professionals for overseas operations, not slackers who do not want to be there. |

Outstanding idea, our youth are wasting thier time in shopping malls and doing minimum wage jobs. They could be guarding the Mexican Border. |

I think so..the only reason that it was stopped is because Nixon made it a part of his campaign to get elected |

well if the government cant get enough people or the right kind of people then it would be a good idea but if it is just to throw bodies to iraq and afghanistan then no i would not support the draft but if it needed for example mechanics and no one would sign up for the job then they should be able to draft people for it. |
