Is a high school diploma or equivalency a requirement for induction into military service?
|
I saw an earlier question about a young man wanting to join the service that has not yet graduated and probably won't from high school. My question is; and can probably be answered from someone in recruiting is.
Do they accept these recruits? Do they require the completion of a GED program while in training and are they discharged if they do not acquire this status?
Sorry I know it's three questions in one but it's all relevant.

It isn't an absolute requirement. A dropout can enlist, but prior to going to basic training, they must have a GED. The Army accepts 10% of their enlisted with GEDs. |

the Army will allow someone without their GED to enlist under the GED-plus program, where the recruiting battalion allocates funding to pay for the GED test provided the applicant passes the ASVAB with at least a 31. CAT IV (under 31) GED holders are not allowed to enlist.
After enlisting, you must get your GED. If you do not, you are not allowed to ship to Basic Combat Training and are discharged from the Future Soldier Training Program.
With a GED, expect no bonus from the Army. All you will receive is the Montgomery GI Bill.
You can be considered a High School Diploma Graduate (thus eligible for bonuses) if you possess a GED and have 15 college semester hours. |

You have to have a HS diploma or GED to get in. They will sign you up if you are getting ready to graduate, you you have to get the diploma or GED first to actually go. They used to accept recruits without the GED or diploma but that changed to required about 10 years ago. |

No you don't need to have a GED or high school diploma to join, but you will be forced to take classes during basic training to get your GED... This actually will make your basic training 2 weeks longer than a normal soldier...And trust me, you don't want to be there any longer than you have too... |

a VERY limited number of GED slots are available to all branches.. In Fact,t he Navy and AF have already used up their slots for FY 07, and it began on 1 October.
GED holders must score higher on their ASVAB in order to be considered(50 vice 35) and the number of jobs they are eligible is vastly reduced. adding 15 100 level college credits turns a GED into the equivalent of a HS diploma, opening up a lot more doors.
If you do not have a GED or higher.. your chances are zero. Only the Army is allowing non GED holders to enlist, but as stated, they have to get that GED within one year of joining |

Actually, the Air Force requires you have a diploma, if you get your GED, most recruiters won't even talk to you because you have to meet other requirements to get accepted with a GED and they have fully qualified people lined up with diplomas. I'm pretty sure you can still get in, but it's more work than if you just finished school. |

A high school diploma or a GED is required before anybody can enlist.
And only a small percentage of enlistees can have GEDs. Not only that - but if all you have is a GED then you need to score really high on the military tests to qualify for enlistment. |

My husband is going to be signing next week to enter the Navy and he has a GED. You have to have one or the other. Also, there is a 90 day mandatory waiting period in the Navy for recruits with a GED. Kind of a punishment. Also, with a GED, he has to enlist as an E2. so, he has to test out of some class to know more than the enlisted E1's know in basic. I hope this helped!!! |

Yes they accept people into the Delayed Enlistment Program (DEP), but before you ship off to basic you must have the GED in your hand. If you do not acquire your GED they may suggest taking 15 semester hours at college, but if you cannot acquire either of these you will be seperated from the program.
If you already have a GED or the college semester hours then you can go right in. This is the same for all branches of the military. |

A person would need at least a GED if they did not graduate from high school....they will also have to take and pass the ASVAB.....passing score of 50 or higher |

The reason that they want to re-institute the draft is that it is the only way they can get people who have above a H.S. education to be in the military. The military does not want thinkers. They want people who will do what they are told. A H.S. diploma just means that you have stayed the course, rather than cut and run. So, you'll fit right in in Iraq. |

To my knowledge there is no such new requirement! This was a consideration that helped lead to reducing the voter age during the Viet Nam thing! That is many of the draftees were in their late teens and were sometimes selected because they were not college bound or had otherwise dropped out of High School!
At the same time the voting age in many states was 21 and college students were given a deferment swelling the fighting ranks with the poor and undereducated. Then again young, dumb and politically ignorant is a classic political metaphor for inductees as they are less likely to question their superiors! |
