Is being a USMC officer a lifelong commitment?
|
Ive been recently interested in going into the USMC as infantry officer and i'm almost done college. Im still in the middle of doing research and just had a thought. I was just wondering - i know alot of guys who enlist for the 4 years, finish, and go on to do different things. sometimes preplanned, sometimes because they change as people along the way. As an officer, can one just stop once the contract is done? Im not saying im planning on doing this, but incase this comes up. this may sound like a stupid question but i'm just curious. It seems that being an officer is more of a lifelong commitment to the force. any opinions?

Yes, once your initial contract is over, you can choose to get out of the Marine Corps, however the majority of officers usually go through at least two commitments, which at that point you stop signing contracts, and you have an open commission. However, I would suggest considering a career, because in the Marine Corps, even if you retire in 20 years, you've still got a long time after that and you will always draw a paycheck. |

Your committment will be for 8 years. You will probably do 4 active and 4 either in the reserve or inactive ready reserve. In order to not be called up later, you will have to resign your commission after 8 years. If you do not, you might be kept on a call up list. That was happening during this conflict. I thought I read something that the military was ending the requirement of resigning a commission, but I would be careful.
EDIT: I almost forgot, sometimes your active duty committment can be longer if you sign up for special training like flight school.
EDIT: Your initial contract is for a period of 8 years. Typically 4 active.... |
