Is it an insult to heroes to claim that everyone who volunteers for their country's military is a hero?

A perverse use and misuse of the word. Respect and compensate the enlisted person.

Call hero:

a: Someone endowed with great strength or ability
b: an illustrious warrior
c: a man admired for his achievements and noble qualities
d: one that shows great courage

I honor all veterans who served in the US Armed Forces. I don't consider all who served heroes. There are heroes who may not be recognized as such. I served with honor, but I am not a hero. To each his own.

I don't think its an insult to the real heroes. But I think that the meaning of the word will be diminished. Its like a cry for racism for everything. It should be used where justifiably applicable, not at every opportunity.

I don't think so.

I am working on trying to join the Army. I don't consider myself a hero, just because I'm joining. I'm joining to take care of my family and to do a job that I will enjoy (68T, if I can).

I don't plan on trying to becoming some kind of war hero or anything. But if a situation ever arises where I am in harm's way (I hope it won't), I will (at least I plan on) doing whatever I can to help protect the other members of my unit, even if it means I will get hurt. That's also what the Army is going to train me for anyways, right?

It takes a hero to volunteer and put his life at the line. Whether it is in infantry or behind a computer, they participate to defend the nation from foreign and domestic attacks.

Ol white biker, you're full of it if you don't' know what a hero is. Everyone in the military is a hero for risking their lives where they may be sent out to potentially be killed. If you stand for injustice, ultimately losing your standpoint, it makes you failure.
Heroes are those that stand up for their country and put their life on the line, not just the ones that fight.

No, because it depends on what cause they were fighting, unless by hero means risk taking, brave, or audacious. Judging the cause fought fore is also important.

I don't know and I may not even care. Every day people are constantly heroic why should a war become necessary to prove anything to anyone?

Anybody who serves in the military is a hero for volunteering for a job where they can be sent in harm's way at any time.

The fact that they were not needed in actual combat does not diminish their commitment.

Yes, we must define what is a heroic act.
Sense of Duty to Country isn't Heroic. (I served and I'm not a Military Hero, nor will I ever claim to be. I just did my job and got out like most everyone who serves.)

The Person who runs in to save others is a Hero.
The Person who stands up to Injustice, is a Hero.
The Person who Helps those who can't help themselves, is a Hero.

And according to the UCMJ on A.W.O.L. during a time of declared war,
G.W, Bush, (AWOL for more then 30 days during a time of declared war, Vietnam) is a military Deserter! A Coward!

The only people I think are military hero's, are people who did something really heroic, or didn't make it home. And all of those people fought for the United States of America.

Not everyone who serves is a hero, far from it. Reality is, at one point or another, we were all ordinary citizens, who for one reason or another, volunteered to protect our country. Just like thousands before had done. And in the end, when our time is done, or the military no longer needs our services, we'll go back to being ordinary citizens, except with the prestige of saying "I served in the ____"
