lol....as a Mensa member who holds only a GED and a Master Sergeant in the US Army, I'll match wits with any of them....I joined the Army cuz I didn't want college....I wanted real life |

Where did you hear that from? lol
That's so not true. My husband is military and he's one of the brightest people I know. He's extremely intelligent. |
|

Mister2-15-2
|
No! There might be difference in level of education, but that cannot be used to infer anything about intelligence. |

lol have you seen how advanced the military is now a days? majority of the jobs are in computers and techincal fields... go talk with a navy nuke or one of the guys who work on helo engines.
most career military are very smart. |

I'd generally have to disagree with you. If anything, it's the other way around. Military people are highly trained, while civilians remain STUPID. |

Wow-you are really trying to create issues here, huh? No. They are people too-there is a variety. Just like every where else you go, there are smart people, not so smart and complete idiots. |

No, I have found that the majority of the military is more intelligent than the average American. Why don't you take the asvab and find out. Bet you can't beat my score. Considering that half of college students can't find their own states on US maps these days, you might be asking the wrong question here. |
|

CAUTION:Truth may hurt!
|
It absolutely is not. I believe I can guess where that stigma came about though.
It IS generally true that military personnel are from low-income households in which education tends to be unaffordable or even unimportant. Those house-holds tend to be run by parents who didn't go to college. An uneducated parent is not as likely to raise a highly educated child. It will be up to that child to choose to pursue a higher education.
Today, lots of young people join the military with the intent of having their school paid for. I'm not ashamed to say that that is a major reason in my decision to enlist. I made very good grades in high school. I was in all honors and AP courses. I did very well on the ASVAB and the SAT, and I was accepted to every college I applied to. |

NO, the military is a direct reflection of its society. There are some smart people, some less so and most are average.
The higher you go in the ranks the more it will reflect more intelligence. The "Peter Principal" at work. |

no i don't think so. would you be happy with someone who couldn't tell which end of a gun bullet came out of defending your country. they must be as intelligent as civilians because before they were soldiers they were civilians and you can't just suddenly before less intelligent over night. personally i would think they would have to be more intelligent than the average cilivians. either way you should be supporting your army if they are defending you. |

No - the opposite is in fact true! Especially the officers

Lets see. I am an Officer in the Russian Army. I have a degree in Mechanical Engineering. I dont think that makes me stupider then the average person, does it?
There aer some slow people in the armed forces. But also, this is true anywhere in life. |

Everybody I serve with either has a college degree or is working towards completing a college degree. Can you say the same about your place of employment or "civilians" in general? |
|

the military wants people who are able to think and reason. you train to react to certain situations, because you won't have time to think when the bullets start to fly. a big difference. |

I think you were poorly informed. A soldier, airman, seaman or corps man is taught to think and analyze. Every course they attend earns college credit, and most leave the service with an AA or higher. As members progress and meet promotion boards; a promotion candidate with additional courses or higher degrees are scored better than someone who doesn't. |
|

Mr. Taco
|
No, that isn't true. What IS true is that uneducated people are more likely to enlist. That is not the same thing as low intelligence, though. |

How many jobs can you get in the military without at least a high school education? ZERO
How many jobs can you get in the CIVILIAN sector without a high school education? LOTS.
What's that tell you about the U.S. Military?
Those DUM military people are the ones who protect your rights you to sit there and bad mouth them and make yourself look foolish.

Where do you think they get the military?I know some very intelligent Military men and women. They train them to follow orders and most do, but they still have minds and some refuse to do inhumane or stupid orders. |
|

No one special

I would not say that military personnel would be less intelligent than civilians b/c Most people in the military have to overcome some type of hardship in their life. I.E. No money for college, join the service. Now that person can get a college education and build a resume at the same time.
Available jobs may not pay well enough for people to fulfill their dreams; join the service now you get paid to travel the US and/ or the world. Those are two examples I have seen with my interaction with military personnel.
Who's to say if military personnel are less intelligent than civilians, cause it's the civilians who join the military. |

Let's see, I have a BS in history/political science and am currently pursuing a master's degree. How many people who believe military personnel are stupid can say that?
Nearly half of my reserve unit have college degrees or are currently in college.
As for the "just reacting" presumption, it is a total fallacy. Military personnel are trained to think for themselves, so that they can make the right decisions. That makes them more intelligent than people who just repeat the mantras of others. |
|

hehe
 |
Not necessarily. Especially when it comes to keeping things simple, military personnel are the best at it in my experience. If you think too hard, you can make a simple task more complicated than it is but it shouldn't make such a big conflict with your superior or commander. Conflicts happen when someone in the military doesn't know how to address the problem in a respective matter to another, not because one is smart or thinks too hard. |
