Well machine guns are legal if you have a class 3 license from the ATF.... and the plane by itself is certainly legal if you can find one.

I'm not aware of any law corcerning attaching one to the other.... I have been wrong before though.... not real sure on how the two would combine, legally

flatbushsam
Yes, but you would need a Federal Firearms License for the operational machine guns.

Ever been to an Airshow?Stood on the flight line and really looked? The last "Thunder over Michigan" airshow feature all P51 Mustangs,RESTORED.It's all there, everything! The only thing not present is a belt of LIVE .50 caliber ammo.I have flown in a restored "Mitchell" Medium Bomber. All the turrets functioned, all armor was present. Not present were the ammo cans and feed ramps.Go to an Airshow! Go to the Smithsonian Air and space Museum,Open your eyes!

I don't often disagree with Scooter but Flatbush is right that the holder of an FFL can posess and operate machine guns legaly.

IF you can get the plane and IF you live in a state that allows you to own machineguns and IF you go through all the procedures for owning an NFA-34 regulated weapon for each gun, then, yes, in theory, it's legal.

In practice, the Department of Defense will not sell you one with functional weaponry on board, so the question of legality is moot. Even if you find one crashed in a field somewhere, it still belongs to the DoD and they will take it back.

Surplus aircraft and parts are sometimes available at government auctions. Functional machineguns aren't.

You can own a machine gun with the proper FFL, and you can own and operate the plane.

Combining the two may take a lot of explaining and pleading to the FAA. Just coming up with a valid reason to be flying an armed aircraft would be challenging.

No to be fully legal, the guns would have to be rendered non-operational. In accordance with federal law.

Edit: Flat is incorrect, fully (automatic) operational machine guns are illegal.

yes it would be illegal to own one with fully operational guns . the only you can own one is to make the guns un operational which means pulling the firing pin and also capping off the barrels plus u need to have your pilot license and also your papers from the FAA . that would be the only way to own one. plus the upkeep is going to be costly plus hanger fees
