Is it possible to acheive general as an enlisted?

Is it possible to eventually acheive a four star general rank as an enlisted soldier? I was reading up on army ranks and the rank; sargeant major of the army is the same as a four star general. So if you reach THAT enlisted rank, you would pretty much be a four star general, right? Am I interpreting this wrong?

No, you can't. Technically, a 2LT holds a higher rank than even the Sgt Major of the Army. It would be stupid as a new officer to try and pull rank over an enlisted like that and it would most likely end up very badly for the CO, but they could try if they wanted (and I'd love to watch whoever was dumb enough to do that get reamed, hehe).

Any commissioned officer is higher ranking than any enlisted personal. The only way you can become a General is to become commissioned by either going through ROTC, OCS, coming in with a useful degree, etc.

No you have to be a commisioned officer to be a General. They are NOT the same.

You can be the highest enlisted person in the military but you will still be less than a 2nd LT. You might make more money, but his word over powers yours.

You are seriously interpreting it wrong! The "Enlisted" and "Commissioned" are two separate entities. Why you think the highest enlisted, the Sergeant Major, has to salute the 2nd Lieutenants, the lowest of the totem pole of the commissioned ranks. And they have different objectives. Enlisted are the specialists of their job and delegate authority, commissioned are there to make decisions, command, and control.

Four star general is no where near close to a Sergeant Major, Sergeant Major may be a high enlisted rank but a four star general has way more responsibility, way more people are under his (mostly) or her command. An officer has been to college had has at the minimum a bachelors degree, and a enlisted personnel may or may not have one. You can start private and make it up al the way to a general officer, but it will take a lot of work and dedication. Officers get paid a lot more but more stress comes for the job. Officers lead enlisted personnel into battle, and with one wrong move or plan, those men can die. That puts a lot of stress on officers. Enlisted soldiers are just as important as officers though. Enlisted help complete the objectives with the officers.

Yes, you are interpreting it wrong. The Sergeant Major of the Army is the highest ranking enlisted person in the Army but he is still enlisted. He has to salute butterbars who just graduated out of ROTC or OCS. He has a lot more authority because of his position; though.

Now, you can eventually become a four-star general after starting enlisted by going to OCS or doing Green to Gold. General (RET) Tommy Franks, the former CENTCOM Commander, started out as enlisted and went to OCS after being selected to attend as a PFC.

You are incorrectly interpreting the Army rank structure.
An E7 - Sergeant First Class is not the same as an O7 - Brigadier General.
The General is a higher rank.
E grades are enlisted ranks. Private to Sergeant Major. They're all enlisted.
O grades are officer ranks. Second Lieutenant to General.
Officers always outrank enlisted.
An O1 2nd Lieutenant will outrank an E9 Sergeant Major.

It is practically impossible to go from E1 to O9. I could see this possibility: Enter the military as a Private E1. Get accepted to one of the Service Academies (West Point, Annapolis, Air Force Academy). Be an exemplary student and graduate from the academy. Have a looooong and illustrious career and enough buddies in Congress to vote to have you made a General officer.

Bravo Golf is correct about needing to be a commissioned to be a general. And while true that a Lt outranks a sergeant major, the Lt would be looking for a new line of work if he crossed a sergeant major's path. In fact, a Lt that does not work with his platoon sergeant will have a tough time making things work. A company commander normally has about 5-8 years experience while the company first sergeant has between 14-20.

no, because the military will doubt your experience, you must graduate college with a respectable degree in a respectable field.
