Is it really worth it to join the National Guard?

No disrespect to current Guardsmen. But I see a few problems with the National Guard compared with full-time duty as a NCO or commissioned officer.
First, it's only a part-time job, with part-time pay. Second, you often have to commute long distances (at significant personal expense) to get to your monthly drills. This is unlike active duty personnel, who are often stationed on (or very close to) the air bases where they work, and their housing is usually fully paid for.

Robert J, I would be perfectly happy with deployment. At least that way, I get to serve my country without having to go through long, expensive commutes.
And I've lived abroad in third-world countries before. Iraq and Afghanistan don't frighten me.

Keep in mind if you join the National Guard, you could be sent somewhere you may not want to go. Gone are the days of playing army on a weekend every month and collecting a nice paycheck. Now you may be sent to Iraq or some other place and actually expected to serve in the military. |
