Is it time to apologize to the French for calling them cheese-eating surrender monkeys?

The French--and other Europeans who opposed the invasion-- were clearly right about Iraq. Whatever about the legal and moral arguments, in political terms it was clearly a mistake. With the exception of the overthrowing of Saddam (and even his execution was bungled and turned him into a kind of martyr) it has been a long catalogue of one disaster after another. Iraq has descended into sectarian civil war, as was predictable and predicted. The world is undoubtedly a more dangerous place as a result of the invasion. Is it not time to say sorry to the French, and start eating French Fries again?

From the beginning I was with the french on this subject. I had lived in the Persian gulf 2 years before this began and knew what to expect. It is never a good idea to dis an ally simply because they are trying to show you the error of your ways but in this country we seem to have a twisted team mentality that says I will always back my team no matter how screwed up they are it seems to be in everything we do from politics to sports. I wish the public would do more critical thinking instead of following the mob and the loudest demagogues. |

No. The French are the folks that have done more to arm and keep the tyrants of the middle east in power than anyone else, solely for profit. At least the Russians do it above board and don't try to hide behind the likes of the UN.The French deserve the reputation, they have earned every bit of it. |

Actually we have been calling them that for quite a few years. Regardless of the Iraq situation – being obstinate about anything is not a positive trait. I have met some great French people and have spent both time there travailing and in the military training with their military. For the most part, I don’t have much respect for them as a nation nor as a cultural people. That may sound somewhat harsh but even back in the 60’s and 70’s when I was there they were living past glories and thought their opinion was the only way.
They need to grow up as a people – the only good news about them is that in another generation they wont exist due to immigration and short sighted lack of inclusion policies for those immigrants. |

nah the french have always found a way to be a thorn in our sides one instance to recallis way back when we were on the way to bomb quedaffi (his name is hard to spell LOL) the french would not allow us to fly over their airspace to bomb a KNOWN terrorist leader, if it wasn;t for their treatment of the germans after WWI ended there most likely wouldn't have been a WWII |

As far as the French go, its really easy to do nothing and then wait to pounce on anyone that actually takes action. I have always believed that when you remodel something, it has to look a whole lot worse before it looks a whole lot better. Iraq is being remodeled, but not by those cowardly, sniveling wine sippers in France. |

The French haven't been right about anything for so long, they can't remember how it even feels. Plus, you obviously, do not know what our men and women are saying in Iraq, do you? In fact, you sound pretty biased and uninformed, spreading bull--s--t like YOU know better than our President? Pretty self-important aggrandizing, puffed up, arrogant fiction.
You need to stop talking to the liberal democrats and get the truth. |

No. They did not pull out of Iraq because they didn't approve of the war there. They pulled out of Iraq because they bowed to terrorist threats. If they didn't pull out, terrorists were going to start attacking France. |

Yes, it is time to apologize, because this type of insult is not very fair and as a French I don't figure myself being more a monkey than an American might be, or maybe everybody is.
And cheese is yammy, he he, jealous !!!
By the way, French politics could have been and still could be a catastrophe, but don't forget that the simple citizen doesn't hear about every state secret, or just too late when it comes out through a world media coverage.
France is a master in hidding mercenaries little wars and sneaky manipulations in Africa for example and only for the private profit of some important people, but really to tell you the truth simple citizens don't know anything about it because the French state is doing all it can to hide it and never gave a lot of information and power to simple citizens.
But generally French are really good-hearted and fair people, they just need to make another revolution, because it is still not democracy. Problem of French is they have no will and are not organized, they are lacking of the awareness they could change something, exactly as someone who is lacking of self-confidence, and everything is done to make them addicted to the powerful and the state who will give them everything but will as well dictate everything and dispense them to use their brain somewhere else than in very shallow
intellectual discussions for the most educated and privileged ones.
But Chirac stunned me by this position concerning war in Irak, and if there is something French people admire in him, it is by the way this position at that moment where he was isolated amid the allies and where he joined the opinion of simple citizens. Its popularity rised up after that, maybe he did it on purpose for future election, because he was very low before in the polls (God knows..).
But you know, since USA are taking too much place and power in this world, of course they attract hostile positions, and it is very logical and welcome for a balance of powers.
Think about a world ruled by French after we had brought war sucessfully to the entire world, ha ha, you forced to eat frogs at every meal to save the planet and preserve the cattle in order they produce only delicious yammy rotten cheese, full of good vitamins, that we will export to France and to the lucrative industry of famous French restaurants worldwide..

Yes, never understood it anyway. We had a difference of opinion about politics. They're not fond of us and made that clear.
At least the French are honest about it. That's more than you can say for most of our allies. |
