The French very much did help the American colonists win their independence from Gt.Brit during the American War of Independence.
The Statue of Liberty is a gift from the people of France to the people of America. It represents the strong links between France and the USA.
Every time you raise a glass of domestic [American] wine to your lips, always remember that it was the French settlers who made this possible.
Look south and think of Louisianna - it still has quite a lof of Napoleonic law in place and in use. Many hundreds of officers of the former Grand Armee of France settled there after the Napoleonic wars and became Americans.
The most famous French General of the American War of Independence is Lafayette - the world famous French hero!

I agree with "Knownow". It was the French navy which greatly aided the Americans. The final battle at Yorktown was really won by French Admiral Rochambeau, not George Washington.
Would the French do the same now? I don't know. The American Revolutionary war happened during the time of the French monarchy, not during the time of the French republic. At the time, we had two imperial powers struggling for power in Europe and the world. The war against the British in America was just a minor item at the time for the French.
Much of the French attitude toward fighting wars is overshadowed by what happened in France during World War I (1914-1918). The war was almost entirely fought in France, and approximately 1.5 million French were killed. Most of the physical destruction to land and buildings happened in France. If we compare the loss of life to the Napoleonic Wars, the French lost in 4 years during the period 1914 to 1918 what Napoleon lost in 14 years that he was in power. There are war memorials all over France, in every village and city large and small. Unexploded munitions from World War I are still being found in France. In November, there was a broadcast from National Public Radio about the finding of "live" unexploded munitions that continues to today. When my family visited France 10 years ago, our tour guide told of a situation near Verdun where a family was camping in the countryside and their campfire set off a buried artillery shell.
Would the French help the Americans in the future? They would if it were in their own self-interest. Of course, they would meticulously calculate the benefits and risks before making a commitment. |

Yes it's true.... not to mention about 4 other European countries...
Without them America would have lost. No that's not me being a stubborn Brit, it's the truth - I only bring this up as a retort to the countless number of times I have heard Americans scream, "OMGZ WE PWND U IN THE INDEPENDENCE WAR!!111".
Mention France and the rest of the countries which saved Americas **** to them and they soon shut up ;)
Oh and I don't think France would war against a fellow EU country, especially aginst America. |

Don't they teach HISTORY any longer ??
France started very low-key... afraid to anger the Brits and start another full-scale war. However, as the Colonials began to succeed, the French King gave support: Naval and Troops.
Amusingly, the King' support introduced the thought of Democracy to France and led to their OWN revolution and the King's depose and execution just a few years later. |

But yes, the French did support the Americans during the battle of independance and as a gesture of their loyalty they gave them the Statue of Liberty; which was made in Paris. |

The French Navy blockaded the Ports so that supplies and reinforcements could not be got through.....I suspect the French would always try and harrass the English given half a chance. |

France and Britain had a very big rivalry, it was known as the 100 year war, but it never was a hundread years of war, it was just odd conflicts, large battles etc. France did everything tactically to avoid britain getting bigger and America was one of the wars. Independace war. Also the amricans had a great tactic called the riflemen nowaday snipers. This was 1 way to win. Britain took the experiance from america used it on france and france found it an unfair way of fighting. |

The French are cheese eating surrender monkeys, apparently. Some American politician expressed that view before the 2nd Iraq War. |

The Marquis De Lafayette is the most famous of the French. Thier Navy caused the victory at Yorktown which ended British hostilities.
The marquis is one of two persons in history granted dual citizenship, the other is Winston Churchill.

yes. It was to the advantage of the French that Britain not gain any more power by winning the war against the colonies, but rather that they be weakened as much as possible by losing.
France and Britain were fighting for Canadian lands. |
