no... maybe not! but maybe because u don't have much to do in the US.. or maybe ur girlfriend cheated on u while u were in iraq... so u are feeling sick and u wanna go to iraq and die. |

Not at all. There is nothing weird about wanting to do your job, wanting look out for you bothers in arms, and wanting to defend the nation. Don't let the civilian media, people, and politicians let feel bad or weird about that. The do not understand, they have not been there, and they do not know that things are not as bad as the news says.
I am right there with you and am anxiously waiting for my third tour to Iraq or Afghanistan. |

No this is not weird - it happened in Vietnam too.
Be careful who you talk to about this - you will be called everything from war monger to crazy. The only people who will really understand are those who have seen combat.
Many things enter into this feeling - the bonds you had with the Marines in it with you, the adrenaline, the constant working of your mind in analyzing everything around you for threat, and many other things.
Whatever you do, I thank you for your service, be safe and may God hold is hand over you in protection. |

Not at all. I was in the inital invasion and got out of the Marines at the end of my first enlistment, just as the insurgency was brewing up. I regret getting out, but I wanted to finish my degree. Just finished it and am going back on active duty tomorrow.
By the way, one guy mentioned REMF. In Iraq, there is no such thing. I know truck drivers who have had more trigger time than grunts. There is no front-line, its a 360 degree war zone. |

Not at all. ( I hope not anyway ) I'm right there with you. I was evac'd out Xmas day '05, been getting put back together at Walter Reed and Ft Bragg. Ive got another 6-8 weeks before they'll let me deploy again. Best of luck. Stay safe. My doc ordered a PTSD screen (because I want to go back)so I should probably mention a PTSD screening, there are several confidential online tests. Not implying anything, just better safe than sorry. |

That is really a normal reaction, you have several things, first the "high" of the exteme enviorment there.
Next the knowledge of all the great and wonderful things you are doing for both thier nation and your country
And it is a normal feeling many soldiers get. If you contine to have problems, the service normally even offers some group couseling for it.
Plus thank you for caring enough to serve our nation and doing a wonderful job |

Well, maybe a little weird but can understand it to some extent. I mean, who really wants to put themselves in a situation where they could get blown up or shot.
I was going to ask what you did there as a potential reason for returning. If you were doing some really good stuff to build up the country, then I can understand why one would want to return. If its to blow stuff up, then I'd be a little concerned-- could be the adrenaline and rush of being in combat has gotten to you. And now that you're out of it, it may feel strange.
Not criticizing you, so don't take it that way. |

In some ways it is but other's its not. My husband's cousin is in the Marines and he is just ready to get back to Iraq. You are just not trying to get back into the reality of not being in combat because thats all you seen for a year. But give it time you'd come to think that you can do more here then back in Iraq. Right now you just want to be gungho and just get back there, but I'm just hoping and praying that all the troops there in the SANDBOX return safely home. But there are those who has spouses there that just would plain and simple not want to go and leave their family back in the states worring about their signficant other. I'd just like to thank you and the many other military personel who are serving our country to keep us free. SEMPI FI. |

See a shrink.
You really don't need to be over there if you are a Marine! Aren't the Marines trying to recover from several black-eyes caused by murdering innocent civilians, including kids! |

With time you should be able to assimilate back into the flow of things, but anyone who has been through trauma has a hard time getting back to the way things used to be. You might want to try to get some counseling, just to help you get back into your everyday life easier, but I don't know of anyone who has been in combat situations who immediately felt the same when they got back home. These things take time. |

Not at all. Most people who have never served, let alone experienced the terror of combat, (I am assuming you're not a REMF) cannot possibly comment effectively. The physical and emotional bonding, the single mindedness of the group. You get back here and you don't know who your "enemy" is. There is also possibly the lack of the rush in a civilian environment. It all seems so petty.
I enlisted just after Vietnam, and all of my DI's, NCO's were Combat vets. They all expressed the same sentiment. They also mentioned that with time, an adjustment could be made, but not by instantly turning your back on the emotions. If you wish to remain stateside, can I suggest that you do not try to bury your thoughts and emotions but address them with your peers. skip the Lefty, un-informed civilians, they are clueless, nor have they earned the right of comment.
Thank you! Semper Fi! |
