If I were a radical Muslim. I would stake out the Baghdad airport and would have blown Air Force one out of the air. Why did no one try this. A small heat seeking, shoulder held rocket would have made the jumbo jet a truck

That is why the trip information wasn't released ahead of time. AF Once also has missile defenses. One heat seeker wouldn't bring it down. |

Honestly terrorists aren't usually the best shots with RPG's. Also they probably wouldn't even get in range of the plane. Even if they did, can you imagine trying to hit a moving plane? It might be possible in your video games, but not in the real world. Oh yeah, and like the previous answer said, I'm sure Air Force One is equiped with anti missle defenses. |

Do you know how hard it is to get a small heat seeking missle? Do you know how hard it is to shoot down a large four engine aircraft with one little missle? Yeah, you might get an engine, but if it's on landing approach it would probably land okay anyway. |

Having spent time at Baghdad International Airport, I would say it would be very hard for a terrorist to just walk up to the flight line and shoot it down with an RPG.
Why?
Because there are 5 Army bases surrounding the Airport, as well as many Air Force Security Forces patrolling the area constantly. It's like right in the middle of the Green Zone inside of the Camp Victory complex (er..Camp Sather).
My question would be, did Air Force One have to do a combat landing like the C-130s do? |

1. Shoulder fired SAM's do not have the capacity to down large jumbo jets. They can barely take down single-engined fighter jets with a single hit. Something like 60% of all IDF fighter jets hit by SA-7 "Grail" MANPADS in 1973 returned to base.
2. MANPADS have a short range and limited altitude coverage. Exactly how close do you think an insurgent could get to the airport?
3. You would need a lot more than just one missile as besides the size/lethality problem is the fact AF 1 is well equipped with defensive countermeasures. |
