Is the Military right for me?
Find answers to your legal question.

Is the Military right for me?

I am still in high school, and I take a Law Enforcement class. We get recruiters all the time, and I know it will help me get ahead in LE if I were to join a branch of the military.
I am hoping to become a Detective one day, and I know that when applying to become an officer, it's 5 extra points that could get me the job.
I have looked into becoming an MP, which would make the most sense considering my career choice. But I have no idea whether one branch of the military is best for me.

Things I am looking for:
I am looking for one that pays 100% of my college tuition.
I would love to travel.
It would be nice if there was a decent amount of pay involved.
I am also looking for the one that will get me the best LE experience.

I have looked into the National Guard the most, because in my LE class, we always go there to train. I know that they do pay full tution, and I can be a MP there.

Basically, I just want to know that, in LE is it the right choice to join the military to get ahead?
Will it really make that much of a difference, and which one do you think is the best based on what I am looking for?

Wow, whats with all the negative nancies tonight?

Anyway, as far as tuition assisstance goes, the Guard in your state will pay 100%, or the new GI Bill will if you join a military branch for 3 years of active duty prior to starting school. It sounds like you have a goal to pursue law enforcement as soon as possible. To that end, I think the Guard is your best choice because you can start building that military experience right away and start going to school for something like criminal justice.

Combat arms or military police are the best jobs for building blocks for a law enforcement career, so you're making the right choice there too. Keep in mind, most MPs do not do law enforcement primarily, they do field combat support work. This is good experience for you, plus you will still be trained on law enforcement it just probably won't be what you spend most of your time doing. Ask a Guard recruiter if they have a law and order MP unit nearby that you can join.

If you want to travel, you probably will deploy in the Guard at least once, and there will be other missions or training you can volunteer for, but your primary focus should be your civilian education once you are MOS Qualified in the Guard.

Good luck.

Well travel = Navy. At least to the good places anyway. First off, talk to a recruiter about becoming an officer. A lot of times the Navy will send you to college for whatever degree (they don't care) as long as you promise to serve X amount of years. Then during your time serving you can attempt to get a job that revolves around physical security. So when you get out, you'll have a degree, and a background in handling bad guys. Pay isn't so bad either.

I think it really would help.

Four years of the military before you turn 21 (age your able to become a cop) will shed 30 credits off of the requirement of college and it'll get you in shape. Being a military officer is a good idea too. That will you get you alot of experience.

I was going to college for criminal justice for a while but I decided to withdraw from college and enlist in the Navy. The truth is that most employers absolutely adore to see military service in your record, especially in the criminal justice/ law enforcement field. And the military has many law enforcement jobs within itself, other than MP. You might even like it in the military so much that you might want to stay in.

Any branch in the military is very good when it comes to college. Actually you automatically earn college credit as you go through all your training. So if you decide to go to college after the military, you're already way, way, way ahead of the game.

On the other hand, going to college and majoring in criminal justice isn't a bad road to take either. It's much more expensive though. But college is always a good way to go.

It will probaly help a bit in getting the job, but the main advantages will come over time youll be fit from training in the army, youll learn to be able to cope with pressure and to defend yourself, which will come in handy now to what branches hmmmm national guard would be good or peace keeping in the army not in the front lines but still getting all the training. im not sure you can apply for peace keeping or if you just get sent out there but its worth the look.

either the national guard or reserve would be good for you. you have chosen a great career and I hope it works for you. Most law enforcement agencies in this country require only a high school diploma and a clean background. If you enlist, you can see if there are any bonuses for military police. Also, talk to a recruiter about it. A recruiter from any branch of the service can give you lots of information.
Good luck

I'm not going to speak for all agencies, but I know that all of the police departments that I have contacted will only hire ex-MP's as a last resort. Police Departments don't want to have to retrain you. MP's know the ins and outs of MILITARY LAW and PD's don't like to spend the time retraining them for CIVILIAN LAW. Your military time is military time and it counts when applying to a Police Department. I know that in the Army as long as you are on Active Duty, then you can get your college out of the way without paying out of pocket. Not sure about the other services but seeing as we are all DOD, I'm sure it's the same. I want to Emphasize that as far as the police departments go, I'm only speaking about the ones that I have contacted. They will hire MP's but only if no one else is in line.

Before you consider all the positives, consider the possibility (and a good one) that you might be sent to the war zone to take active role in the on-going war.

In law enforcement, you may be facing criminals with guns and knives. In war zones, you will be facing missiles, bombs, grenades, and be surrounded by large number of people who's sole job is to kill you.

Is this an acceptable condition for you? Are you willing to take part in this?
