Is the US Army a good way to see the world?
|
The main reason I want to join the Army is to travel, but do you REALLY 'see the world' or do you just see the inside of an Army post for your entire deployment? I'm currently in Army ROTC and undecided on whether to stay in it or not, but if there were good travel opportunities that would definitely sway me to stay in. Thanks guys! Additional Details Thanks Ben, that was what I was looking for. I'm not sure about the Navy because I don't want to just visit insignificant seaports...

I'm an army wife.. my husband and I have traveled to England, Germany, Czech Republic, Italy, France, Belgium, Poland, Sweden & Austria.. etc. We've also traveled through out the states as well.
It's been good to us.. Oh, and my husband has seen other places such as Iraq (3 times) Kuwait and Bosnia...
If you're up for it. go for it |

I think if you want to see the world, your best choice is the Navy.
I've been to 2 dozen countries on 5 continents in 7 1/2 years total sea time.
ADDED: Insignificant Ports huh?
Here are places I have been to while pulling into those "insignificant Ports"
London, ENG, UK; Paris FRA; Rome, ITA; Naples, ITA; Nassau, BAH; Williamsport, CAU; Bergen, NOR; Glasgow, SCO; Edinburgh, SCO; Portsmouth, ENG; Monte Carlo, MON; Vatican City; Dubai, UAE; Port Canaveral, FL; Washington, D.C.; Hania, Crete, GRE; Italian Archipilago, Sardenia, ITA; Casablanca, MOR; among many others. BTW I'm on a nuclear powered vessel that many nations place stiff restrictions on. |

The Navy does the most travelling. Of all the branches, the Army sightsees the least. |

NO! You wanna see the world? Join the Navy! Basic training easier, and there are just as many tech MOS's. Plus if you're 200 miles out at sea the chaces of getting maimed by an IED are slim. If you can get stationed on a Aircraft Carrier, you will see parts of the world you never knew existed!! I was stationed on board the USS Ranger for 4 years and I saw, things, did things and went places in those 4 years that most people do in their entire LIVES!! So, joint the Navy and get on a carrier (especially west coast)!! |

If you get stationed in Europe it's a good way to see Europe.
If you get stationed in Korea it's a good way to see East Asia.
Other than that it's a good way to see the Mid East.
The Army is what you make of it. |

It depends upon how much of where you are at the time to take advantage of your location. Sure you might have long hours, some duty on the weekends but you will have plenty of free time. It depends upon whether you spend that time in the barrack or out and about. Yes, it is a good way to see the world, any service but more than others. Ships dock but not in Berlin, Paris, Rome:etc etc but......don't forget you're oath to Protect and Defend and to obey all orders from those appointed over you...................Don't come back off leave from some exotic vacation and find yourself on Iraq deployment orders and change your mind. It's too late. |

It's a good way to go to war in Iraq. The Army will be there till the oil is gone in 30 years. |

As an Air Force vet I would say if traveling the world is the biggest factor in your choice of which branch of the service to join the Navy is the best choice.....But you must make sure that the job you have is one that is on a ship not one that's done on dry land....Ships in the Navy will stop at different ports while out at sea...You should talk with someone who is currently in the Navy and see how many countries he/she has been to..........The down side is if your married you will be out to sea for months at a time..........I hope this helps and the best of luck to your future. |

No, the Navy is the way to see the world. The Army is the way to see Germany and Iraq plus any small ho-dunk post in the middle of the nowhere USA. The Navy has 6 month deployments where they may go to the Gulf but on the way there, the way back and while they are there the stop any numerous ports around the world like Australia, Hawaii, Hong Kong......they stop they get off the ship, they take tours like real tourists. On the other hand the Army sends you to Iraq where you get to lay over in a German or Kuwaiti airport or better yet be stationed in Germany then go to Iraq. If you really want to see the most of the world go Navy, then I would say the Air Force but the Air Force has a lot more hands on jobs in Iraq then the Navy does. Those are the honest facts for what you are trying to do. Travel does not equal Army. Look into NROTC. If your university does not have it you would still be able to go through an NROTC program if you live close enough to another university that does have the program. You are very smart to start looking at the different dynamics and benefits of each branch now rather than after you have finished the program and obligated yourself to the wrong branch for you. Good luck. |

Well I guess depends when you enlist but yes you would stay mostly deployed in a certain country where the Military is e.g. Iraq |
|

Gotta have more explosions!

No, it's not. When you're deployed overseas, you'll be too busy working to appreciate a new culture and all that good stuff.
Not to mention you'll travel where you're told to travel - the most of the world you'll see will most likely be the rest of the United States and maybe the sand pit.
Try the Navy or Marines, they often disembark at pretty exotic ports.
If you want to travel, do it as a civilian - at least you'll be able to pick where to go and when. |
