That whole situation is....different. That Soldier, she did sign a contract, signed up for 8 years of service. She chose to do 4 years active duty which means she still owes 4 years inactive ready reserve, or IRR. She is not the first to be called back on IRR as I have many friends this has happened too. She made a choice to serve, and I appreciate that, but her service did not end. Should she return to active duty? Maybe, maybe not. A commanding officer will make that decision when she reports for duty...but to blame the Army for her decision is not fair. There is no draft, she volunteered to serve knowing full well that getting called back was an option the government had.

i'm sorry but if the mom had signed up for the army then she knew what she was getting in to.
from my understanding the army will only take the mother if the father is not on tour with the armed services so there is a parent at home with them.

whats the difference between the thousands of daddys that get sent o/s every year? are they desperate for that? should the only ppl alowed to serve the country be childless people?

Sorry, but the Military takes FATHERS from their kids....so, what's the difference? Besides, she KNEW she had an 8 yr Contract with the Military...no matter how many years you Serve, you sign up for EIGHT.
She needs to 'man up' and do her JOB...

did that mother sign a contract? if she did then she has to do her duty. unless there is no one to take temporary custody of her children. then she can opt out of service.

Boo hoo. . .

She signed the 8-year contract. Deal with it. Plenty of fathers
have been taken from their children on a recall, so what's the
difference?

She signed on the line, she should have thought more about what she was doing. She is supposed to have a family care plan in place. There are other moms out there who had to leave their kids and serve the country, I am sure they did not want to leave them but they knew it was their duty.

I guess you are talking about the news story on the mom that is going to take her kids to formation with her. Well she signed the dotted line and knew what she had to do. She knew that there was a chance that she could possibly get called back...she is the one that chose to put that in the back of her mind and go on with her life. I am sorry but I agree with the above comment about what about the fathers that are taken away too. Just because she is a woman does not mean she can't go either.
She chose the life and now she is going to have to live with it. They did not say what exactly was wrong with the parents as far as them not taking the kids, but she better figure something out pretty quick.

Her contract with the Army is in writing, all she had to do was read the thing!
She signed up for 4/4 and now the Army needs her to fulfill HER end of the contract.
This "taking the kids" is all show on her part.
If I were the Commander at the base, I'd have the local Child Services standing by to take the kids. Watch how fast Dad makes changes to be at home with the kids.
In addition, she could also be charged with disobeying a lawful order. All service members with children under 18/still in school are REQUIRED to have a family plan in their service record to prevent this type of thing. So mom could be held in pretrial confinement for disobeying a lawful order and have the kids taken away.
She has screwed herself on this matter, and made it worse by trying to put the Army in a bad light just to get her way.

She signed the contract, no where in the contract does it say "as long as its convenient for me"....end of story

The United States Congress has not re-instituted the draft so the Army isn't taking anyone away from their kids.

If a mom volunteers and meets the qualifications to protect her country then of course they will take her. Her kids are lucky to have a mom who cares enough to put her life on the line to protect them.

There is no draft, so the answer to your question is no.

Lugnut obviously doesn't know the difference between being drafted and voluntary military service.

it is sad,,,but it does happen,,,when you sign on the dotted line you SHOULD read the fine print. they take "dads" from their kids every day. it is part of "the life"

She signed a contract so she knew what she was getting herself into. I'm probably enlisting in Coast Guard later this year and even though the odds of me getting recalled after 4 years of active duty are slim, it COULD happen and I'm assuming it likely WON'T, but regardless, you have to do your duty.

It happens.

Never have I witnessed anything as crazy as this! Bush and Cheney have turned our miitary into business contract obligation instead of patriotic service. As an old school soldier I find the practice of sending family men and women to war when the streets are full of able body individuals detestable!
