No it has nothing to do with the economy. A draw down in forces happens after every major armed conflict. I do mean all it started after the American Revolution. They reduce the number of soldiers and let fewer people in (by raising the qualifications to get in) in short the military is downsizing as Iraq comes to a close. If we enter a major armed conflict the numbers needed will go up and the army will let more people in. |

The military is actually undermanned, but being downsized, so eventually the shrinking demand will probably meet the current and maintained size. It has not been fully manned since, I believe, just before Gulf War I.
If you're implying that only poor people join -- you're wrong. Most of the military members I know are here because they are patriotic and want to serve their country. Many others are here for the educational and career opportunities, or for the travel (especially Navy and Air Force). |

The military is not down-sizing first of all. The Air Force and Navy are down-sizing, but the Army and Marines were growing. The overall number of service members increased.
The military has met all of its expansion goals, so bonuses are drying up. This was starting to happen before this was called a crisis.
There will always be open slots in the military because people retire or get out and new people come in, so there is a continuous flow of people coming in and going out. Over the past four years or so, we were increasing size, so we were taking in more then were getting out. Now it will taper off to one for one rate.
So there will always be new recruiting, just not as many new recruits as the past few years. |
