Is there a systematic naming procedure when it comes to guns?

I was curious if there was one or was it the companies that make these weapons the ones who choose to make the name of the weapon.

I apologize if this is in the wrong section.

By and large, no. There are exceptions and traditions, though.

Glock numbers each new model sequentially, starting with 17. Historically, Glock's first handgun was the 17th patent Gaston Glock obtained for the polymer he made the grip frame from.

Colt likes to name their revolvers after various species of snakes.

Some names suggest the intended use, like "Chief's Special," a revolver supposedly designed for police chiefs, or "Ladysmith," Smith & Wesson's product line designed for women.

The "AR" in AR-15 et al. stands for "Armalite Rifle," the first manufacturer.

The US military has used various systems over the years, sometimes using the year of adoption as the model number (M1911), sometimes using a number and the name of the designer (M1-Garand), sometimes just a number (M16).

The Soviets/Russians have used the initials of the designer's last name and type of gun and the year adopted (SKS-45, AK-47).

Some of Israel's arms are designed by Uziel Galil, hence the Uzi submachinegun and Galil assault rifle.

Et bloomin' cetera, I'm afraid.

NO. There are only some firm guidelines that are widely ignored, when they are even thought about.

Examples:

The British started out with the SMLE #1 Mk1. they prototyped the #1 Mk2, and then standardized on the #1 Mk3. The stayed with this until they when through some more prototypes, ending up with the #4 Mk1.

The us started with the 1903, which became with the changes the 1903A3.

The best answer to your question is this, in the long run, there is little sense in the naming of firearms. The most common procedure involves the year of adoption for military guns.

For commercial guns, there is absolutely no sense, it just depends on what the manufacture thinks will sell. In example, look at the Taurus Judge. What does that name mean, who knows. Look at the S&W M&P line of guns, there are both revolvers and pistols in that line.

As to your question being in the right section, since Yahoo does not provide a guns section, this is just about as close as you can come. In other words, you are in the right place.

The gun manufacturer comes up with whatever name they like for the weapon. They all follow the same standards when it comes to cailber; for instance a Colt .45 and a Kimber .45 shoot interchangeable ammo.

In small arms the answer is no,example Lee Enfield was followed by SLR which was followed by SA80.It's just what the arms companies choose.
PS The HK series of weapons is now made by Enfield,a subsidiary of BAE Systems.
