Is this true? My husband is leaving for Afghanistan...?
Find answers to your legal question.

Is this true? My husband is leaving for Afghanistan...?

He is with the Force Recon, and he is telling me that he could be deployed for up to 18 months, and there could be periods of time up to 6 months where we might not possibly be able to talk. How long are delpoyments, and is this true about us not being able to communicate?

Yo cadence
unfortunately, this is true--- especially for "elite" units for they are often used in operations that require somewhat remote deployment and the "contact" thing becomes somewhat if-ey at best !!
BUT-- two major Up Notes for you to dwell on here--- he will be with the absolute Best Dudes in the freaking world while he is there !! He will have people around him that are so damned dedicated to each other that they know what each other are thinking by the look in their eye !! And, even though it is a hostile envoirnment--- he is not going into the utter madness that exists in Iraq and the upcoming insanity that is developing in Iran as we speak---- there are pockets of hostility within Afghanistan but it is FAR quieter than a lot of other places he could be headed into !!!!
And, a note for YOU here--- God bless YOU for the sacrifices that YOU are making here--- for the ones that wait---All of them--- They too are the heros in this madness--- for they carry burdens and tribulations within them that are hard to bear up under far more than most ever consider---and for that -- know-- that many of us think of you all daily and whisper our prayers for you and your comfort and well being !!

In closing---to Kermit---go back to your lillypad !! The days of the High Tech Taliban are over and their internet research and development team of covert special ops watch units have disbanded in favor of milking goats for survival !!!!!

Can I suggest that you delete this question. No offence intended but sharing with the world when an elite force is preparing to deploy seems like a bad idea. Let's protect your husband and our boys and keep this stuff under wraps.

My husband is also Army and yes this is true. Not only for your husbands recon group for for many and most of the units heading over there. My brother was also there for 18 months, Army, he did go 4 or 5 months without contact also. Unfortunately this is the reality of it all.

Force Recon...absolutely that's true. If he's force, he's tough! Hang in there he'll be back before you know it, I was in Iraq for 18 months.

Kermit is right. You need to retract this question.Good Luck with everything though.

Sad to say-alot of that is probably true. Up to 6 months without being able to communicate? I dont know about that.
When i was in Iraq-i lucked out. Being a mechanic most of my time was spent on the base, thus i was able to communicate with family back home on a somewhat regular basis. Still yet, it was not an everyday thing.
EDIT:
If he is in Recon then yeah....its probbaly so.

Politically Wrong
Any Reco unit can be in the bush for extended periods of time....No outside communications.....SECURITY

If you were to know, you would be told. Deployments are usually Hush Hush.....

You might want to keep this quiet as you may announce his mission

Just wondering
Oh yeah, it just depends on his mission. If he is out in the field, there might be no way he can communicate with you. But I am sure his unit will return to base, a lot. On the base he will be able to call or e-mail. My suggestion is to write him letters as much as possible and e-mails. It is such a good thing for moral. Even if he is gone for a long time, just don't get lazy about communicating which a lot of couples do. Stick with it and try your best. It makes coming home much easier. Cause when he comes home, it is like getting to know each other all over again.

It is most certainly true. US troops are often deployed for 18 months and have long periods of no contact with anyone
you should remove this question as one answerer stated im sure your husband would be pretty p o'ed if he found out you provided this type of info even it being very general

jeweledfruit
Quite possibly. It hasnt been until the last 6 or so years that the military has had this fancy communication with its family members. Regular email was unheard of even 8 years ago. I remember my husband writing emails on a disk and having coms people sending them out once a week.
Anyway- the technology it takes to get emails up and going can give away thier location. If his mission is lacation sensitive then they may take it down for a while. Snail mail may still be an option- but yes, long periods of no communication is possible. SO- that said- when you do write him try not to tell him how bad things are going, how miserable you and how much partying you are doing. He will be looking forward to being back with you and he will have a heart of hope that you are doing ok and waiting for him. And before he leaves he may have a twinge of jealousy that you get to stay behind and live a "normal" life while he is out risking his. Be tender and stay strong.

In Iraq & the Stan,Mobile Phones are not allowed as the Insurgents have the facility of intercepting the signal & retrieving the number. Some Military Families over here have recieved texts saying their loved ones are dead.
BUT a lot of posts now have Sat Phones allowing soldiers to call their families.
We used to get a alloted time per day, usually 5 minutes,to call home.

DID YOU ASK ANY QUESTIONS AT THE FAMILY BRIEFINGS. I KNOW THEY HAVE THEM

I dont know much about the military-i never served. But i have a cousin who was away in Afghanistan and Iraq both. He was able to communicate with us regularly. But i dont think he was an actual "combat" type soldier. I believe he was more of a support type. Now on the other hand my wifes brother, while he was in Afghanistan nobody heard from him for like 4-5 months at a time. It was hard on her and her mom.

Mrsjvb
absolutely. I have a friend whose BF ios currently gone for 16 months.. and she will not hear from him at all the entire time.

This is for Jairarodrguez..
Hey look its coffin boy again. Thanks for coming by today. I really liked your post yesterday about how all Americans that have family members in combat should buy a coffin for their service member ahead of time to save money. You are quite possibly the stupidest idiot I have seen here yet, your starting to rank up there with "Indian Princess."

Also the part about knowing the exact time and date for an invasion of Iran by the US was probley the most retarded thing I have read in my life.

Here is a link for everyone who comes to this thread you should go and read what Jairarodrguez said yesterday you will laugh your *** off.

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=ApB9fv4zWoRIVfG0hfzKLWjty6IX?qid=20070327075517AAHSAFS&show=7#profile-info-8ec9b945217994f87dca04ea8dd66f2eaa

That seems like a really nice thing to say to someones family who has a loved one who is in a dangerous situation with no choice about it.

You should make another post so we can all come back in and make you look like an idiot like we all did yesterday.

I could read that thread again from yesterday and probley still fall out of my chair laughing.

....maybe you should go outside and play hide and go f-ck yourself before you keep posting things like this.
.........................................
To the woman who has a husband in Force Recon.
Please ignore people like Jairarodrguez. They have no class, and are obviously morons.

My recommendation is this:
Be prepared for the worst, buy a coffin.
