My boyfriend just started A school (Navy) last week and him and I are trying to plan on me coming to see him over Memorial weekend and if I can that’s great but I also don’t want to overwhelm him. I also don’t want him to have to pay for all or even most of the cost it would take to get me there and back and a hotel and whatever other expenses. He said he’s more than willing to but I wouldn’t feel right about having him do that. The week before Memorial weekend I have a lot of bills I have to pay so I won’t really have a lot of money for the trip, maybe enough to cover just the plane ticket or hotel. So it’s either I see him then (with him having to pay for most of the trip) and in August for his birthday or not see him at all until August. He wants me to come for Memorial weekend but do you think that would be right of me coming with him having to pay for most of it? I don’t know if this would make up for it but I plan on paying for my August trip completely and buying all the drinks and whatever for him and his friends for his birthday (21st) when I come. Should I go and not worry about the money and just enjoy being able to see him or should I just plan for the August trip?

You have to understand how much he really wants to see you and how much of a break from everything this would be. Basic and A school are all very stressful. Being able to sit in a motel room with your girl, watching TV, or doing whatever else, would be a welcome respite for any service member. |

A school isn't a walk in the park. He needs to STUDY. Take the 3 day weekend, then wait until he's out of school. If you marry him, get ready for longer separations...6 - 7 months when he's deployed to WESTPAC or the MED, for example. Old shipmate of mine in the 'aviation community' finished a Med cruise for almost 7 months, came home, transferred to another squadron and headed out for another 6 month Med cruise 2 months later.
While I was in the Navy and married ('69 - '85), I was gone 13 months (Antarctica...son was born while I was gone and I didn't get home until he was almost 9 months old), 12 months (Middle East), 6 months (Indian Ocean), 6 months (Mediterranean), not counting 2 weeks here and there for short jaunts, schools and TAD.

you'll never have enough money for the rest of your life. thats just how it goes. doesnt matter how much you have, you will spend it anyway. so go and have a good time. he would rather you come to see him than waste his cash on him and his school pals anyway. have a good time. |
