It's always the old who lead us into war, it's always the young who fall. Tell me is it worth it all?

It's always the old who lead us into war, it's always the young who fall. Now look at what you've won with a sabre and a gun, tell me is it worth it at all?

Call it peace or call it treason, call it love or call it reason,
But I ain't marchin' anymore, no, I ain't marchin' anymore.

As poignant today as the day he wrote it.

Yes

some people like to make light of it all, but its serious business, people's lives are on the line. to answer your question sometimes it probably is worth it, somtimes it isn't.

the older are wiser and yes freedom has a price now doesnt it.

no. because, i would risk my life for my family, but i'm going to go out and go shoot people who didn't do anything, but fight for freedom.

Who are you- Phil Ochs?

Go ask an old veteran. Whether it is "worth it" depends upon the cause, the support of the citizens for the cause, and whether the war was fought to a conclusion or only expended the lives and limbs of the "young warriors" to postpone conflict. - until the next generation is of age to be called into the conflict to finish the job or further postpone what needs to be done. Many of the country's leaders were the "young warriors" in previous wars and fully understand the costs and benefits - some, however, are nothing more than politicians - never more than the children of previous generation's politicians.

max_sterling003
Depends on what it is. Maybe you dont really understand what we're fighting for and why. Maybe none of this is really what it looks like. Is what we're doing in the middle east worth it, I think so, but its for you to decide. This is a free country after all.

prancingmonkey
No, its not worth it. Are the sons and daughters of those who chose to go to war in Iraq right now? i scarcely think so. Do the men who choose for us to kill in the name of freedom when our own freedom is not at stake even know or care about those men and women dying? NO. If they did, they would bring them home. It is not in the financial interests of those profiting from the war to bring our loved ones home. Im always hoping those fat old republicans will die off and leave the world to the peaceful and kind, but it doesnt seem to be happening too quickly. thankfully, human conciousness across the globe is changing and with that, the dissolution of old ways of thinking. peace.

Whether or not it's worth it depends on whether you're young or old.

Your prose and poetry has potential, but i wouldn't give up my day job, just yet. The message is very profound, and the question is difficult to answer.

The only way I can respond to this is, what would have happened if we hadn't acted?

MikeGolf
One of the things we have won with a sabre and a gun is your freedom to say what you did.

What is that worth to you?

show_em_your_badge
Tell me whether it is worth it, after all we serve this great nation so you and other Americans can have the freedoms you do. So my answer is yes it is worth every drop of blood spilled in the past 230 years.

It never amazes me that this question is asked constantly by bleeding heart liberals and Democrats with the can't we just get along mentality.....

Those that are experienced are the "old", I would follow them to the ends of the earth, before I follow some young 2nd Lieutenant that got his commission like yesterday.....These "old" that you refer to have been there and done that....

The "young" are the ones that make up the basis of the forces and this is their JOB.....this is what they signed up for...... I am not a War Hawk or am I non-caring for these young folks that have lost their lives. My prayers go out nightly for these souls and their families. I am a stern believer in our military and am stanch supporter of these brave men and women.

Is it worth it, HELL YES...these brave men and women, whom have given their all in the name of liberty for others are the heroes that should be given the up most respect. Those that are still fighting are the heroes that need our support and we as true Americans should thank these heroes for their courage and selflessness.....You have been given the ability to ask questions such as this one, because of the bloodshed of others. Thank a Veteran and give thanks to God for their selflessness and dedication to the liberties of others....

Thank you to all of you Veterans and to those who served your country, so we can live free today......

Victor, Victor, Victor, You should know that we have an all volunteer military. Anyone who serves is someone who chose to serve and I think we all understand that the purpose of the military is to go into combat if congress and the President say so. Your question is highly subjective in nature and cannot be answered in a general way.

Worth it? That's a tough thing to say. Is anything worth spending a year away from you family? Is anything worth watching your buddy die? Is anything worth losing your leg? Is anything worth PTSD?

I guess it depends on what your fighting for and how strongly you believe in it. I will never say that that 18 months I spent away from my husband while he was in Iraq was "worth it" but that's an opinion based solely on my own set of values and really has no bearing on the choice to go to war, nor should it.
