I served 22 years on active duty and after being retired from it almost 15 years I still wear my rank as my official term of address, I am not Mr. I Am SFC. That is how fulfilling my career was. Looking for something more? There is nothing more Honorable; more fulfilling than serving your country and guaranteeing the freedom of our great country.

I'm not sure what you mean. That's a very large generalization that you are making my dear. My husband is perfectly content serving in the United States Air Force. He joined when he was 26.5 He spent most of his 20's "looking for something more" and found it in the military!

What to do?

From my personal perspective, you're right!! Those of us that serve(d) did so to get more out of life. Speaking for myself, I wanted to do my bit to assure the continuation of the ideas that have thus far (before the Bush disasters) been the envy of the world, and it's grandest experiment yet. WE are still becoming a "people". It is an open question as to whether we can be a multi-racial, multi-ethnic, gender neutral society for a long enough time to become a "people" such as the Chinese, Germans, etc. My role as a soldier was to prevent foreign powers from spoiling the experiment.

Military members, like everyone, look to improve their lives. Some of them stay in and go up through the ranks. Most of them leave to pursue other opportunites. (This makes sense since you want few members the higher the rank is.) This doesn't mean that you were not happy with your time in the military. It means that you have done your time, and are looking to move into another phase in your life.

To be all that you can be and more, Military minded and soliders are the best at achomplishing what ever task you set before them even if they have never seen it before it wont matter they will get it done or die trying.

I'm not sure if I know what you mean... but many people join the military out of a sense of duty to their country, a sense of adventure, and because they don't want to spend their life working behind some desk.

I found something most people never try to find..I found myself.

I also found my capabilities, my limitations, and my motivation to do what ever I choose to do with my life, and be successful at it.

At the same time, I served the "greater good" by sacrificing my personal freedoms so people (Americans), including you, could question, judge, criticize and condemn those like me for our service.
