Joining the Army and depression?
|
Ok, I actually never was diagnosed with depression. However, I was actually contacted multiple times by the police because of suicide watches. There was one point I was going to attempt to commit suicide and when I went to do it the only reason I was stopped was because a friend of mine got into my house and found my note before I did it. She called the cops and they found me before I could carry it out. There is a record of that but I don't think that it was written down. Now honestly, I still have feelings of this but it's not as bad. I want to join the US Army, will this stop me? Will they be able to find this out? And please, I just want an answer, this is not a fake question. Additional Details Btw, I also did have a prescription for depression medication.

Military Medical Standards for Enlistment & Commission
Personality, conduct, and behavior disorders
The disqualifying medical conditions are listed below. The International Classification of Disease (ICD) codes are listed in parentheses following each standard.
The causes for rejection for appointment, enlistment, and induction (without an approved waiver) are an authenticated history of:
e. Suicide, history of attempted or suicidal behavior (300.9).
And the military will check with the police who do keep records of this. |

It probably depends on the type of job in the Army that you would be selected for. If it requires and extensive background investigation for security clearance, you won't pass because if there is a police report, they will find it. If the job does not require such a background check and you don't have any felonies, misdemeanor offenses or medical records of depression, you are probably ok. Just remember though. If you ever lie on an application and they find out at anytime during your military career, you will be discharged less that honorably. I would talk anonymously with a recruiter on the phone from another area than where you live and feel them out on this. When I went in years ago I had a top secret clearance and they knew EVERYTHING about me and it freaked me out but I passed it somehow. Good luck to you. |

I know this doesn't answer your question, but I'm surprised the state didn't take over since there is a police report to make you get the help you need. I hope you're doing better and seeking counseling. |

What I have experienced is other way round. There are reasons for any one going into depression , Butit is not necessary that it should continue for ever. One can over come the depression and become a very normal person. Unless and until the reason for depression is not over.
So, take my words and go for selection provided you qualify the other things like age limit, height, sight etc. which will otherwise disqualifies you. |

If there are convictions on your name they'll find it, otherwise probably not unless you want them to. |

Just go in and talk to the Army recruiter. If he asks you if you ever tried to kill yourself then say what you think you need to. They have waviers for everything. |

At MEPS they ask you about it and tell you if you have a mental disorder you can't join but i know tons of people my husband works with that have depression and were diagnosed with it before they enlisted. I also have met people in boot camp when i was in the navy that were discharged for being on depression meds for only a month at the request of a doctor after her brother died. |

Yes they will be able to find out and if i were you i wouldnt sign up for the army if you know that there is part of you still feeling depressed, it will probably bring the worst of it to the surface =( |

Uh, yes this will stop you from joining the Army. If this was recorded at your local Police Dept. the Army will find out. They do a background check.
Think about it, would you give a gun to a depressed suicidal person? |

please don't. they don't need people like you. |

Any history of depression or suicide attempts will automatically disqualify you. I've seen many guys like you in the military that slipped through the cracks, honestly they became liabilities. Plus they not only became a danger to themselves but everyone else as well. You see in the Army we have GUNSSSSSSSS, we don't like to give wackos weapons. So do me and all my fellow soldiers a favor and stay out of the military and get some help. |

You could try to enlist and see if anything comes up, you have nothing to lose. It's totally worth a shot, don't you think. Sounds like if anything you are trying to better your life.
My only concern is that I have first hand knowledge about the Army and what it does to your person when you are deployed to war for 18 months. But I have also seen what it can do to someone who really needs that boost in believing in their self, the military will help you grow as a person and give you skills that you will never get anywhere else. |
