Joining the KY National Guard with a Bachelors and Masters Degree...?
|
I am 32 years old and I have a BA in History and a MS in Human Resource Management. I am wanting to join the KY National Guard but I have questions that I just cannot find answers to. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
1. Would I enter the National Guard as an officer or are there other prerequisites?
2. Would a misdemeanor from 14 years ago (DWI) prohibit me from becoming an officer?
3. Do college grads go through the same Basic training and AIT?
4. What sort of committment is there for an officer (assuming I was)?
Thanks for the help everyone!!

1. See the list below, but you either go enlisted or officer
2. Maybe, a recruiter can tell you for sure
3. you go to BT & AIT, then go to OCS
4. There is a commintment with either
Read below and you can also look at the link provided. You will need to see an officer recruiter, not a regular NG recruiter. So you may want to call and see where you can find one near you.
http://usmilitary.about.com/od/armytrng/a/ocs.htm
Basic requirements for OCS-
At least 19 and no older than 29 at time of enlistment (applicants ages 30-34 may request a waiver)
United States citizen
At least a 4-year college degree prior to entering the Army
Earn a minimum 110 GT score on the Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB)
Meet the minimum height and weight standard ( male& female)
Pass a complete physical at a Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS)
Able to obtain a security clearance
No more than 10 years’ active Federal Service at time of commission
Be able to meet the normal requirements of enlistment (Note: Criminal History requirements for commission are much more strict than the requirements listed in the "requirements of enlistment" article. In general, an applicant for commission must have no convictions by civil or military courts. (This does not apply to minor traffic violations with a fine or forfeiture of $250.00 or less). An applicant must not have been judged to be a juvenile offender. This applies even if the court sentence, or any part of it, was suspended or withheld, or such conviction was in any way removed from court records by satisfactory completion of a period of probation. This also applies to adverse juvenile adjudication. (Note: Some convictions can be waived). |

1. If you want to become an officer you have to go through a certain program.
2. That is something you would have to talk to a recruiter about. Its one thing to have a charge like that if youre going enlisted but if youre going officer they want the best ect.
3. I dont believe they do. In fact, if you were to join the Army and go the officer route you would not go to the same BCT.
4. Depends. In the guard the more common is 6x2. But if you become a pilot it is usally longer!
DONT enlist as a private as the person below me suggested. It would be a waste of your degree not to mention youd be making more money and YOUD be the one in charge. |

You would go through basic and ait as a E4 ... the only way I can think of you going in as an officer if you got a direct commission, but those are done for doctors etc. BUT you can easy request to go to OCS right after you finish training.
I doubt 14 year old misdemeanor will be a big issue for anything...
Yes college grads go through the same basic/ait. You'll be with a lot of young kids and you will find your maturity level drop, I joined at 22 with bunch of 17 and 18 year olds... big difference.
As an officer you don't get the 4,6 or 8 year contracts that the enlisted get to do... .you serve your contract and go into forever IRR or give up your commission to get out of the army if you don't go until retirement... |

The one thing on your side is the Guard, while full up on enlisted , is still way understrength on Officers.
1. From the limited information provided, you are a prime candidate for the Guard OCS option. You enter enlisted, complete basic then are off to accelerated OCS (9 weeks) at Fort McClellan, AL. Within 24 months you will have to complete Basic Officer Leadership Course (BOLC) II and II. BOLC I is OCS, BOLC II is a leadership course, focused on basic infantry leadership and is attended by all newly commissioned officers, similar to the Marines TBS. BOLC III is your Officer Basic Course for your branch. BOLC II and III are usually scheduled close together and will take about 5 - 6 months depending on your branch.
2. Maybe but this may be waived, depending on if your record has ben clean in the meantime.
3. Yes everyone goes through the same basic. You have enlisted Soldiers with everything from GEDs to PhDs.
4. You, like everyone else who signs up the first time, will have an 8 year commitment consisting of a combination of drilling status (1 weekend a month/2 weeks a year duty) and IRR, usually a 6 x 2 meaning 6 years of drill followed by 2 years of IRR.
You may also be eligible for a $10,000.00 commissioning bonus and the student loan repayment program.

1. No, you are qualified though to go through OCS to become an officer. Takes lots of work to become and officer. They lead and command the military, so they cant just hand it out to anyone.
2. That should not matter, although it may keep you from getting promotions. ex: Colonel in Infantry will need a TS sec. clearance, and that DWI will prohibit you from getting one. Only traffic tickets under a certain amount are excusable for a TS sec. clearance.
3. You will go through the same BCT/AIT as a high school dropout. You will be no better than any of the others at BCT. You should be able to go into the Army National Guard as a Specialist because of your education.
4. Well, you wont be an officer coming in. But you can go through OCS and probably serve something like 4 years after that, but if I was you, going through OCS, I would stay in for more years, especially since it's very convenient to be in the National Guard and still have a civilian life.
Good luck with everything. Let me know if I can help with any ARNG stuff. |
