Joining the US Military?

I know the Canadians will be very verbal about this questions, but please try and refrain from being COMPLETELY USELESS to me. (Thanks in advance) I am a Canadian wanting to join the US Military. Do you know anyone who has done it? Do you know any helpful sites. I've googled it a bunch and haven't come up with anything helpful yet. Even email addresses of someone who would know would be greatly appreciated.

Actually, i have looked into the citizenship thing too. You have to get a green card... so can you get a green card based on your desire to join the military?

UPDATE: I have seen a news article that the US ARMY has a pilot program to allow those who have been in the US for at least two years on non-immigrant visas and who have needed language or medical skills to join the military.

For language skills I can see that would be an obvious pick; for medical skills I'm a little puzzled since a nurse or doctor would normally be commissioned and you MUST be a citizen to get a commission...still. I suspect this is a first step in opening up the military to more aliens, and probably the DREAM act to provide a path to legitimacy for children who came here and are stranded as involuntary illegals who have not grown up in their home nation. Still that's all in the future if ever.

Yes you have to get a green card to enlist and no you can't get a green card in order to enlist. There are two ways to get one. First, you can be a close family relative to a US citizen who can petition you to come to the US as a premanent resident. Second you can qualify for a scarce job by having very high and in demand skill set.

Typically a young person will not find they can qualify for a job related green card.

So the odds of being able to do this are, I'm afraid to say, not in your favor.

Should you get a green card and enlist you can apply for citizenship almost immediately.
