Joining the army help?

I am 16 and am planning on joing the army when i finish my A levels in 2011.

I just need to know whether you have the option of leaving after completing training and in the time that i am doing training is there a risk of being shipped out or will they only do that after the training is complete?

Plus any other information would help, thanks

Erm i don't see how you can even suggest that i'm dumb when i'm taking A levels which are very hard and important exams. The step up from compulsory school and the one that leads to uni.

If you read my question i want to do training which is simulation and preparation. I don't want to actually go to the war zone. I just want to improve my fitness to new heights and also learn how to fire guns so that if i am ever required to i am able to.

You won't be shipped out any where before you have finished training. when you enlist you have to sign a contract to serve for a certain period of time, so you won't be able to leave just like that. It will cost you money if they allow it.

Why waste your time with your A-levels?

You are either going to spend your days murdering innocent people (I don't think a well written sorry letter will make it any better)
You will get shot in "friendly fire" A-levels not going to help there...

If you are doing A levels I would have thought you to be somewhat intelligent...Yet you want to be under the control our the government??

ALSO, how can anyone with the user name "bigdaddy" comment on anyone staying home and wanking to men. That's all his name impies... lol
AnimeGeek, I think you are more than right.

Just read your update... you wanna join the army to get fit?? GO TO A ******* GYM.
If you join the army chances are you will be sent to a war zone. What A levels are you doing?? P.E?

Greetings,

As a veteran who served for six years, in five countries, through four time zones, on three continents, for two enlistments, I have one hell of a story. Currently I am about to enter law school after my final year at Rutgers University. I would not have bee able to do this had I not joined the Army and made a sacrifice (which almost cost me my leg in Iraq). It's the greatest duality between the easy and hard. On one hand military life will be the hardest thing you ever did. On the other the military will be the easiest thing you'll ever do while opening opportunities you'd never have had otherwise. Anyone who took advantage of the military can neither hate nor love serving unless they are completely brainwashed one way or the other. With that let me answer you're questions:

To leave after training, which includes basic and AIT (advanced individual training), you'll need to sign up for the national guard or reserve. But if you've paid attention to the news, being in either of those will not save you from deployment. average enlistment is 6 years for reserve/guard.

Your motivation is completely wrong for entering the military. If you want to get in shape and boost your resume join the gym at the local community college. The purpose of the military is to prevent wars and win them when it can't... that's it. To join the army means you will become a part of America's politics and her property. Unless you are ready for a serious commitment I would drop the idea. You could do yourself more harm then good.

But you still have a few years to think about it.

Wow, I wonder why people are being complete c*nts to you (well not so much the first two, they're just sarcastic).

Okay this may be a jumble but I hope it's okay for you to read:

In reply to one of the answers given saying why bother with your A levels, do bother, you don't only go into the army to "kill innocent people" there are many jobs within the army that would be seen really good jobs, as obviously yo ucan go into law, medical, engineering, training... well anything, just with camoflauge gear on :-P - so keep on with your A levels, and if the army doesn't go well (I dunno, for medical reasons for something) then you'll have something to fall back on (and you have a good set of A levels (which the army will look good at too)

Secondly you can't drop out once your training has done, once you've gone off to basic training you have 28 days to drop out and then after then you're stuck (well I say stuck.... you're there ;-P ) - at least that's what I'm lead to believe.

The only risk of being shipped to another country is after your training, once you finish your 6 months training... you are the army's *****, they say jump you don't even say how high - you just do it... lol - but that's what you're trained to do....

Also, just thought I'd suggest this as you may be a good candidate, if you go through with college and get a few good grades for A levels and stuff you should have a look at becoming an officer within the army, you'd go to the Military Academy at Sandhurst... where prince harry, william attended and stuff... imagine how proud your parents would be to see you pass out there :-P - just a suggestion... got a couple years yet :-P

Good luck, I may be joining around the time as well (well I aim to join next year, but something may go wrong lol) so I may see you there lol

Hope this helped

Gothanimegeek has a warped view on the forces, maybe a closet g@y?

If all you want out of the Army i fitness training and weapon handling skills then you won't get through training. There's a lot of dedication needed and there's more to it than running and shooting

Maybe the TA would suit you better with less chance of deployment

When you join the British Army as a Junior Leader aged 16+ you will sign a contract to serve with the Colours for a given number of years.

I'm not sure exactly how long these periods of service might be now, but when I joined the British Army as a boy of 15 in 1957, I signed on for six years with the colours and three years with the reserves.

Normally a soldier's serivice starts from his/her 18th birthday.

My advice is that unless you intend to make the Army your career, do not sign on for more than 6 or 9 years. If you decide you want to come out 'early' you'll have to pay for that - buy yourself out and this could be thousands of pounds, very much depending upon how much tax payer's money was used training you up etc.

Old soldier, British Army 1957-1965 [age 15-24]. Got a trade too.

Hey, if you wanna go stay in some shack with a bunch of meat-head guys that can't get any other job because all they do it hit things and grunt at each other, then probably get either shot or f**ked by one (or more) of them, go right ahead. Most people are just content with having aspirations to achieve something in life, like discovering a cure for cancer, or bringing hope and happiness to the world through music or storytelling.... But Army Grunts like yourself just want to shoot and destroy things, and bring pain and suffering to the world.

Good job, man. I hope the thought of all the suffering, crying families of the people you will have killed in the future doesn't give you nightmares or psychological trauma. That means "make head go bad" - sorry, should have started translating sooner.

BTW - the guy below just sent me an e-mail asking me for naked photos.... *is disturbed and scared*

You won't be much use to the Army if you haven't completed training.
