why did kamakazi pilots wear helmets?
got me thinking , does anyone out there actually know why?

They didn't
During WWII, airmen didn't wear helmets they wore skull caps to keep their heads warm, and they held the radio equipment.
If the kamikaze pilots didn't wear one, they wouldn't know where to fly as they received vectors from the ground. |

the proper reason is that it has all the communication equipment in it so they can talk to the commanders.

They were not actually helmets - for protective purposes anyway. They had two functions 1 - keep them warm in the cold temps 2 - they held communication devices (microphone, radio speaker) |

NO, they didn't. Kamakazi was sort of like suicide, but they did what they did for a good reason. (In their point of view, anyway.) |
