Funny that you should pick those two wars. Because they both had opposite results.
In the Korean War, North Korea invaded South Korea and was about to occupy the entire country when the United Nations (including the United States) arrived to push them back. As a result, we still have two Koreas.
In the Vietnam War, North Vietnam invaded South Vietnam. The French tried to stop them but lost. Then the United States got involved trying to push the North Vietnamese out of South Vietnam. However, when that didn't happen and the United States pulled out, North Vietnam was able to continue its invasion and take over South Vietnam. As a result, we have just one Vietnam today.
Since the Korea result was desired by the United States, it was worth it. Since the Vietnam result was not desired by the United States, it was not worth it. |

None of those decisions could be made knowing the results. To know the results and criticize from half a century later is not a good way to understand history.
It would be like criticizing your parents for not buying Microsoft stock in the eighties. They had no way of knowing the result of their actions. |

According to the economic theory that a Military Industrial Complex as part of a "Permanent War Economy" will always keep the base levels of demand and production up to the point that the economy will always be ticking over, then the USA should keep on taking part in every war.
Eisenhower instituted the policy and it has been in place ever since. The notion that victory is necessary is almost entirely irrelevant. |
