Language Fluency after Defense Language Institute?

I am going to the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA to learn spanish, I took two years of it in high school and I am wanting to find out from someone who has already been through the course what my level of proficiency should be when I graduate? Will I be able to understand spanish radio stations and TV completely and be able to converse with native speakers or will I have to be using the language in my job for a while afterwards before I get to that level? Any input is appreciated.

Brian I appreciate your response, I guess my followup to that is how fluent is someone typically who majored in spanish for an associates degree, again using the tv shows and radio stations or conversing with native speakers as an example? I want to know how comfortable I will be if I were placed in a strictly spanish speaking environment afterwards with no english assistance whatsoever? Thanks

I don't know how it is with Spanish, but my Russian is good enough to discuss politics, weather, news, driving directions, etc. at a informal level. I would need some more training to be able to do direct, face to face translations of those type of conversations.
I feel pretty confident that if I was dropped off in Moscow or St. Petersburg, I would be able to get around just fine.
I can watch or read the news, and understand most of what is being discussed.
I took German for 3 years in High School, and I would say that my Russian was better than my High School German by about the 4th month at DLI. After High School, I lived in Germany for a year. I would say that a year of Russian at DLI gave me an equivalent fluency to 3 years of High School German plus 3 months of residency in Germany. |

Your level of fluency after leaving the Defense Language Institute will be at or above the level of someone who went to college and majored in that language (In fact, you receive an Associates degree upon graduation).
In addition to learning the language, you'll get to take part in some of the traditions of the people that speak the language, see examples of how the language is used and, in some cases, get to visit the area where the language is used for a better grip on the language. Also, you'll get about four months after graduation to learn how to use the language specifically for what the military wants you to use it for.
