Let's say the draft was re-instated?
Find answers to your legal question.

Let's say the draft was re-instated?

and it applies to both men and women of all ages.(I know it isn't real, but pretend!)
Would you.....
a) Join the military?
b) Move to Canada?
c) Do something else that isn't listed above (What would that something be?)

Thanks :)

I'd go to jail.

I'm not afraid to stand up for what I believe in...and I don't believe that my government has a right to require me to serve in the military...unless our shores are directly threatened.

I'm happy to defend my countrymen...but I would never march on foriegn soil just because my president didn't like the leader of a different country...or wanted some oil...or thought that it might make the region more 'stable'. I don't believe in being the 'World Police'. We have enough problems within our own borders.

It would probably be a universal draft. Everyone will have to serve 4 years in some sort of government service between the ages of 18 and 28.

For example., military service will get you the GI BILL and other benefits, where as four years as an orderly or aid in a VA hospital will get you minimum wage. In between the two you could do Border Patrol, Forest Service Fire Fighter, etc.

The point is everyone would have to do something for their country, regardless of their political views.

Those who chose to move to Canada can stay there.

Ted
I'd re-enlist, unless it was a really bizarre situation.

I dont want the fact that I'm a Marine cloud my judgement or lead others to believe my oppinion is skewed or biased.

BUT

i think that all those "reasons" some of these "americans" are listing about not believing in the war are simply bull.

i belive that these "americans" are hoping to decieve us into believing that their "strict views, morals, and beliefs" are anything but fears of death and selflessness

the "man" at the top of this question said he would only defend it if the shores were invaded, or something of that nature, i actually couldnt finish reading his "reply" since i already know what his message is, but anyway

would you? i dont think so

do you value being an american?
it is aparent that some of you dont
and you "people always go back to the same thing, "this is america, we get freedom of speech and choice!" and then [insert "drone of the government's" name here] says "we fight for that right you blatantly exploit for your own selfish needs and wants!"

if it helps you to think this way, think of it as not fighting for Bush; youre helping to make sure that PFC John Wyler gets home to his wife, youre helping to make sure that Ssgt Mike Richards sees the birth of his son. Its alittle abstract, i will admit, but can you see what I'm getting at??

I hope anyone who would desert america in its time of need flees America
because they dont deserve to be Americans

Considering the fact that something truly catastrophic would have to happen at this point in order for a draft to be reinstated, and considering the fact that the way we conduct war now keeps casualties down to a minimum (we have what, 5000 dead from the current war while Vietnam accumulated 60,000+), I'd have to say I'd join in a heartbeat. If we were so in need of men that our 100,000 standing army couldn't get the job done, I would feel it would be my duty as an American to serve and possibly give my life for whatever cause was at hand.

I do stress though, it would take something monumentally catastrophic for this situation to happen though. A foreign invasion on our soil, nuclear war, etc. etc.

zachtheace
I wouldn't be a coward and instead of getting drafted I'd enlist like any other patriot that was ready to pay back their country for the greatness it has given us. And if there was such a war.....I'd defend old uncle sam and the freedom it stands for.

Moving to Canada would be a ludicrous answer! If you answer with that, then you should be ashamed of yourself. If you answer that you would run, then get yourself out now. If you would run if you were going to be made to fight for the country you've grown up in, then leave the country now.

I'm currently in the military so a draft would not effect my status, but here is another option for those who can qualify. Sorry, but this option requires a true strength in your personal convictions and is not for those that are just cowardly wuss's who don't want to go. Most people don't even seem to know this option exists.

OPTION D)

D) The Alternative Service Program affects those persons whose conscientious objection encompasses both combatant and noncombatant military training and service. The program allows men who have been classified 1-0 by their local boards to fulfill their service obligation in a civilian capacity contributing to the maintenance of the national health, safety or interest.

Employers considered appropriate for ASW assignments are limited to:

(1) The U.S. Government or a state, territory, or possession of the United States or a political subdivision thereof, the District of Columbia or the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico;

(2) Organizations, associations, or corporations primarily engaged either in a charitable activity conducted for the benefit of the general public or in carrying out a program for the improvement of the public health, welfare, or environment, including educational and scientific activities in support of the program, when such activity or program is not principally for the benefit of the members of such organization, association, or corporation or for increasing the membership thereof.

Appropriate Employment

Employment programs or activities generally considered to be appropriate for Alternative Service work include:

(1) Health care services, including but not limited to hospitals, nursing homes, extended care facilities, clinics, mental health programs, hospices, community outreach programs, and hotlines;

(2) Educational services, including but not limited to teachers, teacher's aides, counseling, administrative support, parent counseling, recreation, remedial programs, and scientific research;

(3) Environmental programs, including but not limited to conservation and firefighting, park and recreational activities, pollution control and monitoring systems, and disaster relief;

(4) Social services, including but not limited to sheltered or handicapped workshops, vocational training or retraining programs, senior citizens activities, crisis intervention, and poverty relief;

(5) Community services, including but not limited to fire protection, public works projects, sanitation services, school or public building maintenance, correctional facility support programs, juvenile rehabilitation programs, and

(6) Agricultural work.

Join the military (But protest that I have to be around people who don't.)

a) Do my part.

However, I'd like to answer further.

c) do something else...

1) be born rich, white and priviledged tied to a political family or have friends with pull.

(like all throught history....Like the souther Confederates who paid $23 dollars to have someone take thier place in the civil war, or be put in the Texas Air Guard, during Vietnam to protect Houston from the Vietcong )

only the poor, are asked to kill the poor of other countries.

Ok, the draft will not be re-instated.

1) The Active Duty can increase in size without a draft with volunteers. (Increase benefits, etc)
2) The you will need to use the Guard/Reserves (again, can increae with benefits, etc)
3) Then you would have to use up the IRR (Individual Ready Reserve) after someone leaves the military they still have two years in which they can be recalled.
4) Then you can have your draft.

c) Join the Coast Guard.

If I sensed that the draft was going to be reinstated I would join the US Air Force. I would get all the books on the subject of Air Force testing and I would study like all h**l. Getting a good job in the Air Force could lead to a great education and a good job after your tour is over. I was in the Air Force and although I wouldn't say that it was heaven, it wasn't all that bad and I learned a lot which helped my career later on. Moving to Canada is a coward's way out and doesn't help you or your country. you would be an outlaw. The AIR FORCE! (answered by Dog Lover's husband)

Love Canada
I remember in the 60's a sign that said
"Avoid the draft, wear pink underwear"
These days you'll have to vote Obama

You can come to Canada, but bring money...

I'll have to choose C since I am ineligible for obvious reasons.

I would have to mentally prepare for the influx of people coming in who wouldn't want to be here. We already have enough trouble with recruits who came in for the wrong reasons willingly, it would be a lot worse having to be in charge of some kid from Beverly Hills who was pampered his whole life. I would still be proud of them for coming in considering the ones who would run away to avoid service.

I would also have to tell my civilian friends who are about to get drafted to get in shape fast if they want to make it easier on themselves.

To answer your question A. Anyone who would go to "Cananada" isnt a true American and doesnt deserve the freedoms that they have. I am a military wife, when I see people protest the soldiers it make me so upset. The soldiers are the ones who keep Americans free from harm and would die for them so they could sleep safe at night. We are at war because it needed to be done. Why dont all you protesters go live in another country for a while and see why we are war and how good you really have it here.

Sorry I'm too old and disabled or I would enlist like during 'Nam.

Both my brother and I joined the Army and we did not have to. We'd do it again.

I love the US enough to fight for freedom and not wait until we are the last free country on earth. After all, firemen put out fires in the middle of a forest, not waiting for it to come closer to houses.

And I was born in Canada!

as a australian we have been involved in all the 20th centuary conflicts with the mojorety involving drafts i am deffinetly FOR the draft if it is NEEDED and those who run from it are then running from there country and its people

Robyn Duck
moot question - there will never be a draft. They don't need it since the military had plenty of volunteer recruits.

IF they imposed one, my 29 year old would probably be too old, depending on the date they choose. But I have sons that are 23 & 21 that might have to go. I also have a son-in-law that is 27 (as of today).

They would go into the military if needed. My younger sons are currently in college. Son-in-law just graduated and has applied for law enforcement places.
