Ugh...
Yeah... Tried that.
My husbands in the navy, not army, so maybe the army actually helps a bit more.
The "help" that Fleet and Family services had was a computer that printed out names and numbers of different jobs around town that were available.
Just because you are a military wife does not make you more qualified than the average person for a job... Well, I guess that varies from employer to employer.
In VA Beach, it took me 3-4 months to find a job. and 1 year and a half to find a job that suited my skills and paid more... I met a local charity that was ran mostly by Navy retirees, so they had a soft spot for military family members.
I had just the opposite experience when I moved to Maine. The base was scheduled to shut down in 2 years, and most people there will be leaving sooner than that, so I rarely got called to interviews for any good job at all, and if I did... once they reviewed my work history and realized why I moved last time (husbands duty station changed) I never heard from them again.
. An employer is not going to want to go through the effort train you only to do the same thing again 1-2 years down the road when your spouses duty station changes AGAIN.
However, an easy, low-skill/low-pay/unchallenging job is better than no job at all, and since we were used to livingg off the income from our two decent paying jobs, I HAD to take whatever I could get.
So... I'm at Target. Making quite a bit less than what I previously had, but at the same time.. They transfer me everytime we have to move. They even transferred me for the 6 months that he is on det so that I can go back to the state where my family lives.
I might be able to eventually find a better job, but I can keep looking, and meanwhile be grateful that Target IS as understanding as they are, and helpful in transitioning me from one place to the other.
The Navy never really helped at all in finding a job :-P |

The Army won't necessarily help you with finding a job. You'll more than likely be on your own in that department. But I would certainly look for jobs on post. You'll be located near large cities so you'll have a better chance of finding a job,but something to take into consideration is trying to find a job in some of the smaller towns around post. They tend to be a bit more understanding of the military lifestyle (ie taking off of work for homecomings and all) You could also try getting a job at your college, the pay won't be amazing but they are almost always trying to hire students for work-study programs. |

I have always had a difficult time finding a job with each transfer, let alone one that I actually use my degree in or make decent pay. Employers "can't" use military spouse against you, but they do! Keep in mind your current transfer is happening in a very hard economic time. Be sure to have child care lined up before you start seriously looking! My advice, take whatever you can find, but continue looking. Base is assist, I repeat, assist you in you job search, but don't have it set in your head that you will walk into the office and out that day with the position or pay that is desired. |

well... on base they have banks, offices, stores( PX's), work out gyms, restaurants, etc, you name it. It is like a little city. Off base, depending on where, ie Fort Hood Killeen, you can get a job off base if you don't like what is on base. it will take time to adjust, but eventually you'll be back to work to supplement your husbands check. The Army should help you if you cannot help yourself, but I'm sure you can. Take a look at local jobs in Ft. Carson, as well as Ft. Stewart, and surrounding city. It should yield a good idea of what is out there in your job description. |

I live on Ft Carson right now and I work from home. I match my husbands income, I am a college tutor. There are many things you can do. I'm sure it would be easy to find secretarial work. |

Once you get on base, you can go to the job center and they will help you find and secure a job quickly............ |

It doesn't matter which post you go to, there is always work for realtors. Anyway, both posts are right next to large cities. Savanah, GA for FT Stewart and Colorado Springs, CO for FT Carson. I mean literally right outside the gate.
And the army is not going to help you find a job. Although you can apply for work on post. |
