you will not be allowed t move there unless you are on his orders. He may have to report as scheduled then get an ORDMOD to add you to his orders. this can take anywhere form a couple of weeks to six months.

you cannot get on his orders unless you pass an overseas screening and get command sponsorship as Shafter is OCONUS.

base housing, IF available and IF an option is NOT furnished. at most you will have Kitchen appliances and a W/D. waiting lists for on base housing can be a year or longer and is based on paygrade and bedroom entitlement.

If he has orders to Hawaii before you are married then they will be unaccompanied orders. You cannot just get on a plane after you are married and say "Here I am". He will have to report, get the orders amended, have you go through a medical and possible dental screening to get command sponsorship. Once you have sponsorship he can set up them possibly paying for your flight but be prepared to pay it out of your own pocket because you were not on the original travel orders.

You need to get several copies of your marriage certificate. To add you to DEERS when you are married he needs to take the marriage certificate, your birth certificate & SSN card to the closest base. If you are with him then that is better you can get your ID card right then.

No military housing is furnished you will need to get it all yourself. Because the weight allowance for him will be lower than accompanied you are better buying it all there. He can have some things moved but not that much. You can get most of the stuff there from the exchanges, departments stores, etc....

You have a choice of in housing or not. For starting out you might want on base housing it can be expensive to live out in town and drive to work each day.

I had a lot of questions before I became a military spouse. My husband has only been in the military a little over 2 years, so I don't know a lot. There is one thing that I would advice you to do though. My wedding was scheduled for July 7, 2007, but my husband and I got married in March. We did this because I wanted to have medical insurance and an ID card right after we got married. I'm so glad we did that. It still took us 8 months to get all the paper work through. He didn't get BAH until November.

We got married when he was in AIT so I was not on his orders. As a matter of fact, they sent him to Korea on an unaccompanied tour. I really wanted to be with him so I quit my job, took a teaching job in Korea in order to help subsidize our income and moved to Korea on my own.
