MCX / Military bases. How much cheaper is it from buying there then other stores?

Congrats on your decision to be a Marine. Normally Walmart will be the cheapest, however the other day my son and I were looking at the Elite at the PX - $399 and no tax. I normaly shop on-line but you can find some good deals at the PX.

I have found that you still need to shop around. True, on base you do not have to pay taxes. However, I find that you can get stuff cheaper off base most of the time (even including taxes). The Military Exchange Network (MCX, NEX, AAFES) is still a business looking to make a profit. The only difference is some of their profits go back into the military installation that they operate in.

The difference with the PX/BX/NEX is that it will only cost $400.00 flat where if you buy it off post it will be $400.00 plus 4-8% sales tax.

In general, the PX cannot mark things down like electronics. It is a set price. On things that have a profit margin, like clothes, they can, but most electronics and games have a set price by the manufacturer so the tag at the PX will be 399.95 just like at Best Buy.

Some things are way cheaper, others are not. You're saving on tax at the very least. Have a friend check it out for you.

Occasionally the exchange will have some KILLER deals. Like some places will have a liquor tent sale, where you can buy beer/liquor/wine in bulk for a cheaper deal. I've also picked up a full blown version of Microsoft Office (retail: $300) for $60 because it was a military appreciation edition.

But as far as the xbox is concerned, I got mine at Target. Local base didn't have any. On the flip side, local base had some games Target didn't have in stock.

Generally it is cheaper at places like best buys.

The PX isn't really cheap, it is just convenient.

And they do offer high quality stuff

Could be the same price but you don't pay sales tax on it. Part of the sale goes to the MWR fund to pay for things like ITT, sports, bowling, etc..

Commissary has a surcharge but that is to pay the wages of the manager, stockers, cashiers, etc.. Everything else is sold at cost.

there is not much of a difference. you just don't have to pay for taxes. if you buy it on base. there is a lot of items that are cheaper out in Wal-Mart then on base for the same thing.

Simple.... deduct the taxes you would pay at a regular store. Initial release costs are all the same. Games, Consoles, ect.. you just won't pay the tax on it.

Commissaries work a little different (Military food store) they have a surcharge, but also don't charge tax... so not as good a deal..

So yea, the more you buy, the less you pay (gotta love the tax system)
