Marine for 4 years?
Find answers to your legal question.

Marine for 4 years?

Would I be able to join the Marine Corp after high school for 4 years and no more than that. Would the Marine Corp help pay for college tuition? If i sign up for 4 years can the Marine Corp extend it without my permission. What is life as a Marine. Im 17 but want to graduate high school before enlisting. Please no stupid liberal answers.

I have respect, not for hippies though.

The truth is, while you're in the corps, you get Tuition assitance, and everything's paid for. You can even get an early release form signed to get out of work to go to class (though of all marine bases, there are only community colleges in travel distance) I would suggest online courses, that way, you can continue your studies while deployed. the deployment schedule right now is 6 home, six there. when you get out, you'll have the GI bill.
As for involuntary extensions, it's possible, but unlikely. If you're something special, or so good the corps is desperate, they'll do whatever to get you to re-enlist. I know a gunny that they wanted so bad, he said he'd only re-enlist if he didn't have to shave anymore, and now he's probably the only marine with a full beard.
Of course there are exceptions. I know this one guy who joined in 2001, and they've kept him in 3 years after his EAS because he was on med hold. but it probably won't happen

Can't extend w/o permission? Does stop loss only apply to the Army?

Marine corps is definitely hard work, but it has helped a lot of my friends to start a life of their own.
It will not come easy, and there will probably be times that you regret your decision.
However, it offers a steady paycheck, reliable medical and dental coverage, gives you a place to stay, and pays you extra if you are in a "war zone". It's called "hazardous duty pay" I think.
They can extend your period in the Marines, it's called a "Stop loss".
It's definitely a sacrifice but it saved a lot of my friends from falling in the gutter after high school.
The marine corps will help you pay for college tuition once you complete your contracted period of time. I think that is called the GI Bill.
I think people who disrespect the servicemen have it all wrong. These people are trying to make a living, and protect America's people so they can make a living.
The marines don't make the decision to start a war, they do what they are told. Hate the guy in charge, not the guys taking orders.

spunkers,
Yes, the marines will do all of that for you. The Marines will help will education. But remember, the Marines are a branch of the military, so thier first priority with you is going to be combat and war, not your education. The Marines are a great way to serve your country! There is a chance that the Marines can do a "stop-loss" which is where you do have to go back to being deployed even after your contract and time is up. (no I didn't get that from that movie). There are other choices, if you are interested in going to college, you can always do ROTC for the Marines, you'll graduate college as an Officer in the Marines. Whatever you choose to do, think long and hard. Think over the sacrafices you will be making to be a Marine. Good Luck to you Semper Fi

Rea said: No, they can't extend it without your permission.

WRONG... They can extend you for the"needs of the Marine Corps" If you're on a float, on a unit mission where they can't get you home by ETS and right now they have this thing called STOP LOSS, maybe because of a WAR, I dunno!

During WW2 an enlistment was for the length of war + 6 months.

you want the skinny on my Marine Corps, SEE A RECRUITER or go to Military. Com. You have general queries that can best be answered there.

As for not liking hippies, be careful... at least ONE has become a commander-in-chief!

Buddy, it doesn't matter what YOU want to do, sorry but once you head off to basic your *** BELONGS to the Corps. Sure they'll give you education and all but once your done with the training they stick you where THEY want you, If you don't want combat (Which is where you will most likely go, due to the Iraq bull crap) I'd wait a couple years, I think an average Marine tour is somewhere around six years, give or take, once the six years are up you can either retire from the service or go full career and jump the ranks if your just an enlistee. all in all, the Marines will hold onto you for as long as they see fit, but yeah if you want to become a Commisioned Officer they've got schooling that they'll pay in full

Hey - I'm a liberal!
But we will always need soldiers. (I was Navy).

The USMC link is below - or go to your local recruiting office (just don't believe everything they tell you).
Marines are tough. We had two in our family.

Take care.

Ok if you want money then go to the air force.

You should consider college first

. If are determined to join the service check out all branches before making your decision. Most contracts have a 2 to 3 year reserve period tacked onto the the contract after completion of enlistment.

During time of war the military is authorised to extend your contract until the end if it needs you. At this time there are no guarantees that you will serve 4 and only 4 years of active duty. This is told to you (or should be) by your recruiter, and is also spelled out in the contract.

Yes, your college tuition is paid for. It was just signed into law that anyone who served during Iraq/Afghanistan will get
%100 percent tuition even if serving 3 years. Or for a 3 year contract. If at all possible regardless of which branch you decide on, getting into ROTC in high school will help you considerably prior to going in. It will help you go in with more rank, more rank more money, better chance of promotion and so on.

Best of luck in what ever decision you make.

If college tuition is what you want, you need to look into another branch. the MARINE CORPS is not for you! Sure the Marine Corps will help pay for college tuition, as will everyother branch, but that's if you make it out alive. And with that attitude, I have my doubts. But that's just my humble opinion. As for your question, When you enlist in the Marine Corps they own you for 8 years. 4 years of active duty service and 4 of inactive service, which means they can recall your a$$ back at anytime during those 4 years if they need you.

I'm sure the Marine Corps has a website which you need to find and read before making a decision. Yes, you can join for just 4 years; yes you will get the GI bill to help pay for college. No, they can't extend it without your permission. Life as a marine depends on what area you go into. You have to graduate high school before enlisting; it is really hard to get accepted with out a diploma.

My boyfriend is a Marine.
He actually leaves for Basics on the 28th. :/
he signed up for the 4 year enlistment plan to see how he likes it, that way he can stay longer if he likes it.
no, if you sign up for 4 years they cannot change it without your permission. they'd need your signature.
He just graduates high school as well. but turned 18 a week ago.
andd..i dont know if they pay your college tuition..i doubt it. but they might?

you should do it.
and thanks :)

You have to make a 6 year commitment in the Marines. 4 can be active duty and 2 in reserves but they could activate you during those 2 years in the reserves. As for extending it without your permission, yes, that's possible - not highly likely but possible. As for help with college - yes, it's a good way to get help with college but don't expect 4 years active duty to completely pay for you to go to college for 4 years. A couple of good things - the service gives you the opportunity to get experience as well as education - a big plus when you do finish school and go out looking for a job - employers like both education and experience so it will give you more options than education alone.

Yes the marines can elp pay for college. Congress just passedfor the new gi bill which offers excellent benifets for school. the answer for can they extend you is kinda. Every military contract regardless of branch of service is an eight year obligation overall( i know there are programs to reduce MSO, but tipically 8yrs). what happens is in your case you would serve so many years active then spend the remaining time in what is called the IRR. The IRR is kinda like a phone roster where if they need you they can call you back to work.

I would also recomoend looking at all the branches before joining. you wouldn't buy a car without shopping around so don't pick your future until seeing what everyone has to offer

"Stupid liberal answers" thats just rude. Hope they teach you respect in the marines.

You can go to military.com and ask fellow people in the marines any questions that you have on their forums.

Well you shouldnt disrespect people just because they think differently than you do.
