Married army life? pay for moving and relocation?
|
getting married and fiance is joining active duty. will they pay for moving our stuff to his first post? What should we do with the car? He plans on making a career out of this. Need advice! How does it work with military wives and having careers? I want to be a vet tech in an animal hospital, is this possible traveling around?

The army will pay for the move of your household goods(your stuff) along with one P.O.V.(personally owned vehicle). Once he receives his orders you'll start packing... most likely the military movers will pack FOR you! Most likely, the unit he'll be training with will inform him off all of this intern informing you! You won't have an official duty station until he's done with training, BCT and AIT. I wouldn't worry too much about having your belonging's moved and no need to worry about the vehicle. He, as the servicemember will have to arrange everything through the military, but that's usually not that difficult! As far as careers for military spouses go, there are programs set up specifically FOR military spouses to start careers and to also be able to transfer to your new duty stations(one after the other) WITH that career!! There are several websites available for the military and their families for this such as this: www.mwr.com , www.militaryhomefront.com , www military.com , www.militaryonesource.com ... and many others! Once your husband receives his orders to his first duty station, you can actually receive ALL the phone numbers you'll need from military home front website, which will also help you 'plan your move' and 'transition'! And yes, it IS possible to stay with one career, as a military spouse, while one the military's move time!!
In any case, congratulations on your upcoming marriage and welcome to the military family/life!!! |

It all depends. Officer or Enlisted? Married before or after induction?
I am an old soldier so some of what I am going to say may be dated.
If he is going enlisted, No, the military will not pay for your move or his movement of household goods. The requirement was for the enlisted person to be at least pay grade E4 AND have at least 4 years of service before they were eligible for transportation of dependents and household goods.
If he is just going in, he will be in a training status and pretty well restricted to barracks and post for 4 to six months. Towards the mid to latter point of his training he may be allowed a weekend or two off base. So until he finishes training, you can pretty much stay home and drive his car.
Officer: Everything changes. He may be restricted the first part of training, but later be eligible to have his family and household goods shipped at government expense. But only if he is married before he goes in. Dependents acquired during an assignment are not eligible for government transportation unless certain preconditions are met (In Europe extending his tour). In some areas, dependents are not allowed at all.
His commander and/or 1st Sgt will be able to answer any questions.
Your employment during his career may be varied. You may go to some places where jobs are easy and pay well, and then be in other places where it is just not going to happen. As an example, my wife is an emtomologist (bug basher). During my career she found work as a lab technician, photo processor, day care supervisor, set up her own T Shirt shop, work in a vet office, and spent a lot of time as a stay home mom. She worked for US, British, and German companies. You will need to be open minded and flexible.
Best of luck to you and to your (Even if he is wearing the uniform, you will be the spark plug of his career) career in the military. |
