Military Branches?

If you wanted to go into the military, what branch would you pick and why?
U.S. Army
Army National Guard
U.S. Navy
U.S. Air Force
U.S. Marine Corps
U.S. Coast Guard
Personally for me it's the Navy

I did 40 years total, so I'm all over this one, but it only fits me, and you will have to see if the reasons I give fit you too:
US Army, the work horse of the military hard work, mostly getting shot at, and a second rate education in how to stay alive.
Army Guard, good for you to get grounded and learn a trade or tech skill. The guard doesn't do a lot except in time of war, and then most of the history shows it was spent in the US bases at home. That has changed.
US Navy, I'm not into rocking to sleep and I have had a few nights on a carrier, but the Navy is a job for someone that wants to be at sea half of the time and at shore on a base or tech school the rest. Your skill level is higher in the Navy then most of the other services.
USMC This group of Men and Women are the back bone of the military! Plan and Simple, they train train train or fight fight fight! They are the first in and the last out. As a pilot They came after me more then once! I think God for the Marines and the men that make them hard and strong.
US Coast Guard, This group is like the Navy, but spents most of their time protecting our coast lines. Their jobs are like the Navy's to a level but in some cases a lot more PR type of work.
I did 5 years Army, and 35 Air Force, so Air Force for me. You get to stay clean, mostly at home in the US. You fly in and out of where your going and you don't sleep in tents or spend time in swamps or jungles, unless your down. Then you sit and wait for a Marine to find you and show you the way home.
Good Luck in your new job! |

My husband picked the Air Force because he wanted to be in a more technical branch...and for the civilian career path he chose, it was a better fit than the others. |

U.S. coast guard, because i dont want to fly, and i want the least amount of chance that i would have to go to iraq.
In my opinion marine corps is the most specialized and better.
The u.s. coast guard is easy to get into and has the best advantages that others. |

It depends quite a bit upon what you are interested in and what fits your life. Fortunately, different people have different answers or we would only have one military service......and that wouldn't work out very well. In my experience, there is quite a bit of crossflow between the services, so the specific career field is more important than the service. |

15 years ago, I chose the US Army; after 3 years in active duty, I then moved to the US Army Reserve; 12 years later and 1 tour in Iraq; I believe i made the right decision. If I could do it again, I'd do the same (except I'd stay in active duty longer). |

I could be wrong, things might have changed. But, I believe, technically the Coast Guard is not a military branch except during war, one declared by Congress. Also, I believe the Coast Guard's parent organization is the Department of the Treasury. And it was always my belief that the Coast Guard paid higher than the services. The Coast Guard was created to intercept ships and impose tariffs in place. But I believe the current function is to intercept smuggling, mainly illegals attempting to enter and drugs. They also rescue ships and boats and do saftey inspections. My familiarity could very well be outdated, as everything is about 35 years ago.
But if I'm correct. I would say join the Coast Guard just on the basis of pay. I haven't the foggiest on how promotions run.
Otherwise, I would recommend Navy. Better food and quarters in most cases. Fastest promotions for enlisted ranks. And my finding is ex-Navy do best when or if they move on to civilian jobs, the training is just more applicable. I was Army and training really that wasn't applicable to civilian life.. |

I did 3 years in regular army and did 20 years ad 6 months in the Army National Guard. The service was challenging, leadership positions are plentiful as well as schooling for leadership. physical training is a job requirement. I learned never to look down on anyone reguardless of rank and or job and position. They could be the one who saved your life. Arogance has no place in the military. Arogance can get a person killed. If you know the job, do it but do not fake it, it can cost lives.
The National Guard use to be known as weekend warriors, but after the 1st gulf war, that sh#t went out the window. We use train 9-5 just about, now they [aly the sh&t for real. Good people to know, comradery and friends for life. Skills that can't be beat on the outside and the leadership skills that are second to non. Military experience on your resume with a confident demeanor will impress bigtime....That was my experience in the Army and the national Guard. It is what you make of it!!!! |

U.S. Air Force- You got a better way to become an astronaut??? |

Welll I would pick the national gaurd if you still want a civilian life and there's the air national gaurd if you want to fly. It is true about the AF that they have it better but when you get deployed your right in there with all the army guys any way, living just like them. |

I guess it all depends on what you want to do.
I'm currently in the Navy, and it's definitely the right fit for me. Lots of travel, early leadership opportunities, and what I think is the most varied choice of service selection (surface warfare, submarines, pilot, naval flight officer, SEAL, EOD, etc etc etc).
Each of the services has their pros and cons.
As to an earlier comment about the USAF and astronauts, there are more astronauts from the US Naval Academy than from any other commissioning source... |

I would pick the navy. the idea of sailing around on a boat during a time of war appeals to me more than walking around on enemy soil. plus, the sailor suits are way more amazing than army, marine, or national guard camouflage. |

US Navy - a lot of technical training available, plus many opportunitis for overseas travel. |

AF...easier to get rank...easier jobs...easier bases...more and better health/hospitals/dental. |

The U.S. Navy would be my 1st choice, 2nd is the U.S. Air Force. But the U.S. Army get rank faster. |

I believe it was LtGen Victor Krulak that said "The United States does not need a Marine Corps, the United States wants a Marine Corps." .
With that said, I agree with John M. |

Life goes on

I recently joined the Navy, because I feel like I can actually make a difference in not only my life but also in others. It has alot to offer when it comes to your career, benefits, and training. |

U.S. Coast Guard. They actually get to perform for real rather than just practice all of the time. No offense to you soldiers that are at war now. You guys are for real, for sure. |

good lord, listen to John M. this is wartime and in wartime the ones that matter that fight and win for the stars and stripes, are the USMC. They are the top of the military food chain. USMC are the toughest, the bravest and the best our country has to offer. The only other training that comes close to a marine's boot camp is the other branches special forces. Why join if not to be the best. I would only join the elite if it were possible. The few, the proud, the Marines... |
