Military Underpaid? Anyone Agree?

Military Underpaid? Anyone Agree?

Anybody else think our boys overseas risking their lives 24/7 should be getting closer to 500,000 a year as opposed to 30,000?

I guess it's not really about the money though... thank GOD!!! otherwise the US would be up Sh*T Creek!

God Bless Our Troops!

This is the reason that a lot of our troops get out and start working for the private sector security forces like Black Water and such.

People in the military do need a raise, and I'm not talking about the 3.5% pay raise that is being talked about.

Very much so.. the public in general has no clue.. and yes my hats are off to our brave men and women who volunteer.. our debt can and will never be repaid to them and their families.. most of which never expect or ask.. not the reason they signed up.. they are all heroes in my eyes.

I was paid a 120 a month as an PFC back in 1970 .As I recall that was with combat pay.I certainly hope the rate has improved since then. It is never enough when you are being shot at.

I spent 23 years on active duty in the USN.
I felt I recieved a decent paycheck through the years.
Your right, it's definately not all about the money.

Not all military is underpaid.
I do think that rates in the military should be equivalent to the "real world". If they would bring pay equivalent, a lot of good active duty members would not separate and stay in.
In my husbands rate, he is making less then 1/2 of what he would out in the "real world", taking into consideration special pay and allowances (depending on he duty station and if it a sea/shore billet) at times comes up to just over 1/2.
Although serving is not all about the money, at some point in our lives, thinking about leaving for money has crossed a majority active duty members lives.
Although I do have to add, retirement at 20 years looks mighty nice on paper, let alone if you stay 25 or 30 years, few civilian companies can match or beat it!

My husband is AD AF and we get by ok. I mean, we're not driving BMWs or anything, but we don't worry about paying our bills. It all comes down to whether or not you think people like my husband (who just lost a deployed collegue/friend this week) deserve more than 'getting by ok.'

Well as a vet, I can say that yes I think that the military can be underpaid but as a civilian now I can say that there are a whole lot of other jobs that put people in harms way that do not pay well either. We just lost 3 policemen in Pittsburgh over the weekend. There are thousands of police officers who put their lives on the line everyday who never see 50,000 a year. Truckers are also underpaid. There is a truck accident every 16 minutes.

The other thing that you need to think about is that there housing costs are not figured into their salaries and when deployed to a combat zone, military service members do not pay income tax. Also, officers receive alot more than 30,000 dollars per year.

TRICKY
I think it would help the military if they paid them more because more people would volunteer to be in the military knowing they would be making a fortune. But honestly respect from the whole country, and 30,000 dollars seems pretty fair. Remember, you also get many bonuses and things to earn more money.

I agree 100%. They are misused and abused. No one should have to serve the time they signed up for. I think the draft should be started again. I would give young men a goal in life. Freedom is not free. I was drafted. I did not want to go, but I did.

Military benefits are top class. If anything we're overcompensated... but I'll deny ever having said that if it comes down to a vote.

...
Military gets a lot of allowances, privileges, ect... I think it's pretty fair...

I make over 100K a year in the USAF...so I don't know what your talking about.

Most people complaining they don't get paid enough are only 18, but have 3 kids and 2 brand new BMW's.

Don't pretend like you don't get paid what you're worth.
