Military Wife's/GF- How would you say your hubby/BF being gone effects you?

My hubby is joining the army reserves and the unit he's joining is leaving in Jan. 2010 for Iraq and I wanted to know how deployment effected you, your kids ect. And how things were different when they got back.
One more thing if you could change the past and stop him from joining would you?

You will go through a roller coaster of emotions but you will learn to cope and adjust. It never gets easier but you learn to manage better. You will just be handling everything by yourself. Try to set up a support system with friends and family. Make sure you go over every little detail about bills etc so you are both on the same sheet of music.
Kids can adjust pretty well if the parents handle it well. My son loves to make things to send to his dad. Your hubby can record stories for the kids. It also depends on the age of the children.
You will both have to learn to adjust when he returns. You will be used to calling all the shots. It take time. Let him unwind. You will fall back into your normal routine. The children might be a little hesitate for awhile. Don't force them they will adjust as well.
I would never stand in the way of my husband decision. |

the saying goodbye NEVER gets easier, but you learn to manage your time away. make fiends have support groups and let your family help when they can! we use a web cam to talk to each other and let our daughter talk to her dad while he is away. when he gets back from a deployment it takes adjusting. you will be used to doing EVERYTHING and he isnt going to want to come right back in and play husband and daddy...he needs time to get back to a "normal" lifestyle. it takes a lot of patience and love and support but NEVER would i go back and try and stop him from joining! if it is a dream they have stopping them will only do damage to your relationship. Stay strong and support him through everything, he will need it |

I totally agree with the first ansewerer-- It is never an easy thing to go through but you manage and with the help of friends and family it makes it a little easier.
No I would never change the past and stop my bf from joining.. He was already in for like 14 years when we got together. Knowing he is in the military and knowing that theres always that possiblility of getting stationed overseas is something that I knew and had to learn to accept going into the relationship. All you can do is back your husband and support him.
My daughter is from another relationship and sure she misses my boyfriend but we keep in touch... he talks to her when he can.
good luck honey and if you need anyone to talk to let me know |

My fiance/common law husband was already in the air force when we met. He is currently on a training mission and this is the longest we have been apart, so I'm trying to get used to it since pretty soon he will be deployed to Afghanistan. I asked a similar question a week or so ago because I noticed that we are arguing a little more than usual on the phone while he's gone. It's frustrating for me being home alone all day (I don't have a job yet as I just graduated University) ... plus we just moved to a new town and I don't really have any friends there yet so it's hard to keep busy. I wait all day for him to call so I can talk to him, and either he can't call or the phone cuts out halfway through our conversation. I can tell already that it will be difficult when he is deployed, but I know that it will be easier when I keep busy with work and friends.
Plus, although he's only been gone a few weeks, it feels like so many things around the house have needed dealt with while he is gone ... things have broke, etc. I suppose it has given me an opportunity to become a little more "handy" around the house fixing things on my own and dealing with other pressing matters that have come up.
Can't help you with the part about kids as we don't have any children yet, but he comes from a family that was constantly moving as his Dad was in the military, and he has told me about his experiences with that. I would have thought it was pretty hard to move around to different schools a lot (since I grew up in the same house and same small town and school), but he said it really wasn't all that bad. |
