Military and ex-military, what are your thoughts about being branded as terrorists and extremists by DHS?

Most of us have been hoping that our good men and women who serve our country to wake up to the fact that the US has been usurped.

The United States Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Intelligence and Analysis issued a report last week suggesting that current political and economic conditions are energizing right-wing extremist groups, that many of these groups follow extremely conservative ideologies and that some may seek to recruit and “radicalize” veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Being retired military I am highly insulted by this memo, I think the DHS should concentrate its energy on the real enemy of his country/ or are the people that think that our country is going to hell that enemy. The greed in the Government system has to stop. This country has been going down the drain since the end of the Regan Administration.I don't care what party you are the politicians are thieves and care nothing about the hard working American citizen. Placating the poor ie.( welfare, immigration and social security give a ways for everyone that has a sob story) is just another way to keep the votes comming in and keeping the status quo. Thats just my opinion and I am entitled to it.

I'm kind of nervous.

They did it to the Veterans coming back from Vietnam... but the only thing we did was, after being unable to land jobs that have long since been outsourced to third-world countries and to illegal aliens for a lot less money, and after going quietly deeper and deeper into poverty, thanks to an appreciative nation and government, wind up in the streets and under overpasses. We weren't dangerous then any more than we're dangerous now. But it makes for sensational reading.

The media aren't interested as much as informing as they are inflaming. They want you angry so you'll thumb through the paper or skip to the Web page, or continue to keep your nose against the TV screen, because, when you do, you're subjected to their advertising. That's where they make their money.

If we were as bad as they say, there wouldn't be a protester alive in the US. Every one of them would have been brutally murdered by us. But they post their bull stuff because we're not like that at all. They know we'll let them get away with it.

Who gains?

Anybody who wants to take down our military. The terrorists immediately spring to mind. But, back here at home we have the "pink coalition," "SDS", quite a few academicians who've never accomplished anything worthwhile in their miserable lives except get a few college degrees, a few million people who are angry that we're still in Iraq and who don't have the guts to go there themselves and do something constructive, and I dare say quite a few members of the Democratic Party.

I'm a Veteran. I was in from mid 1960 through most of 1985. I'm on the chopping block. While I was in for 25 years, that time spanned the Vietnam war. That was also an unpopular war. Also, I'm not contributing much to the economy. I'm worried that a grateful nation will stop my pension, close the Veterans Home in which I live, and remove any medical and dental benefits to which I'm currently eligible... because I'm an "unnecessary military expense."

We saw some of this at the end of the Korean war. We saw a lot of it after Vietnam. We saw some of it after Desert Storm. And it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see it beginning as Operation Iraqi Freedom winds down. This is apparently what's called, "supporting the troops but not the war." As one concerned Veteran, I'd like to request that you hold your support. At least in combat, we could fight back. You "supporters" are protected by the laws we swore to defend -- and a great many of us died in the process. You're welcome.

As sickening as it is... there is a bright side.

It has been a long time coming but FINALLY our government fears us instead of the other way around,

I'm not ex-military but my dad is as well as my Grandpa. To label those who have fought for our nation's freedom and/or the freedom of another nation as a terrorist is ridiculous not to mention a form of profiling which God forbid we profile anyone who might be Muslim.

Did you know airlines are forbidden from checking more than 2 Muslims a flight but can check anyone else as much as they like? Why are we profiling American heroes based on one radical over a decade ago but based on the largest attack on American soil launched by several Islamic radicals and an active terrorist organization based on Muslim who still seek to cause harm to the United States we turn a blind eye? Can anyone explain this?

This is no different than reverse-racism in the US such as the firefighters who worked hard to be promoted but then were told never mind because they wanted to hire someone black who couldn't pass the test. Or students who are denied entry to school because they aren't "colored."

And me, as someone who believes fully in the Constitution as well as our sovereignty and God and Life... I'm a terrorist now too! I attended a tea party as well which was deemed extremist activity (Speaking of which, 12 people lie on the ground in CO and that's more news than hundreds of thousands of Americans attending tea parties across the nation?). Yeah, the mainstream media isn't bias. >_>

The woman in charge of DHS needs to be fired as does the entire Obama administration as does 95% of Congress, Democrat and Republican. The government has this attitude that we the people are ignorant, arrogant and need to be told what to do. It's the other way around and the government needs to be reminded of who they are serving.

I say let them be afraid, when the government is afraid of what the most loyal will do then they might actually think about the things they legislate.

And I know it won't happen and they won't change one bit but it is fun to intimidate people at times

hehe
That's a bunch of bull crap- any radical group bent on violence should be carefully monitored. It doesn't matter if its a extremist right wing or extremist left wing group. Gangs, radical groups and terrorists have been attempting have their members infiltrate the US military to gain special skills. Btw, DHS did not call members of the military terrorists.

That does not "brand" the military and vets as terrorists or extremists. The military has been aware of such recruitment attempts by radical groups for some time and provides training to service members concerning them.

As a gut reaction, I felt that the statement was wrong. However after I thought about it, it makes a glimmer of sense. That being said, other groups have the same potential for mischief such as cops or firemen or whatnot. One would not hear statements linking them to militias, would one?

It's nice how that article only cites "white supremacist" groups and their "extremely conservative ideologies" for this behavior, even though there was a similar story on Fox News yesterday about black and Hispanic gang members who join the military in order to get combat training and steal weapons and supplies for their gangs. Hmm. Last time I checked, "extremely conservative ideology" does not include racial warfare. This article is just another attempt to inject racial tension into existing political differences and stir up unfounded fear of conservative America. There's a reason the NYtimes is in the toilet these days. Nobody wants to read this bull.

Anyway, it's really sad that this is even being talked about right now. My husband, who served in the Air Force and currently works for the Department of Defense was pretty put out by this little scrap of prose. He said something to the effect of, "I guard this guy while he sleeps and he thinks I might be a terrorist? He doesn't deserve to be an American." I agree wholeheartedly.

UNBELIEVABLE. This head of our Homeland Security needs to GO, NOW.

Saying "a group may seek to recruit vets", is a far cry from saying "vets are terrorists".

Al Queda seeks to recruit and radicalize Muslims, that does not mean all Muslims are terrorists.

We had a detail we assigned Privates to in Iraq, you'd be perfect for it.

No where in the report does it brand veterans or soldiers as terrorist or extremist.

You need to take your partisan politics back to the political section.

We do not want to hear them.
