Military dependent insurance, and long distance education?

Military dependent insurance, and long distance education?

I'm turning 21 this year, and if I'm not enrolled in college full-time I will no longer be covered under my dad's military insurance (as a dependent). If I am enrolled full-time then I will be able to be on it until I'm 23, or I'm done with school... whichever comes first.

I was thinking about doing Penn Foster, since I already have several traditional college credits in Paralegal studies. I figured I could transfer those credits to there, and then get my degree through them. I'm trying to work and go to college. When I called Penn Foster they said they weren't considered full-time or part-time because you get 16 credits of work and then work at your own rate. You could get those credits done in 6 months or 12 months, or whenever.

Would this be considered by the military to be a full-time "higher education", or no? I need to be able to get a letter from the college saying I'm a full time student and a letter saying my projected graduation date.

Does anyone have experience in this, or an opinion? Sorry it's long.

**** Army Wife****
I've never heard that it had to be a specific kind of school. When we talked with Tricare/DEERS earlier this year (our oldest turned 19 and the ID office in his area was giving us the run around). They said that once he turns 21 as long as he is in some sort of schooling be it community college, vocational training, private college, graduate school whatever my child chooses to do that he would still qualify. They also never said anything to us about that it had to be full time.

Have you contacted Tricare or your local DEERS office directly and asked them for clarification on what is required to stay enrolled? If not I would suggest that you do that and ask that they send you the policy in writing so you can have it to refer to.
