Military funeral, what should i expect?
Find answers to your legal question.

Military funeral, what should i expect?

My grandfather passed away Sunday. He will be 91 tomorrow (april 29) which is why we are also having his funeral tomorrow. he was a good man, married for 73 years, in the army for 34 and he was a General. Mama said that tomorrow he will be buried with "military honors" what does that mean? what are they going to do differently? i was just wondering because, unfortunately, i've been to several funerals and i was wondering what is going to be so different. thanks

Watch the movie "Taking Chance" even though the funeral is only a small part, it lets you know how importantly we feel about all of our veterans. If he was a General than he definitely rates top honors. Tell your family that all of the services salute your grandfather today. The other posts tell you the type of events that will happen.

My thoughts and prayers go out to your family in this time of loss.

It depends on who does the honors.honestly the chances of it being an Active duty funeral team is slim to none and if it is the chances of it being a 7 person detail is even slimmer. They reserve those for Active duty because of the situation oversea and have basically limited retired or vets to 2 person detail if they are done by Active duty personnel.

The more likely option is that it will be a 7 person detail from the American Legion. They will do a full folding and presentation of the flag, 21 gun salute and the playing of taps. This is what we had done when my grandfather passed away and it was exactly what the Active duty does to the letter. Having them do it will not make it any different. Also he does NOT have to be in uniform to get the honors but it is an option if your grandmother/mother chooses to do so.

Here is a website that has some info on it about Military honors....

I'm very sorry for your loss. All the answers are good and correct but I just want to add a little since you haven't been to a military funeral.
Brace yourself for the 21 gun salute. If you are not ready, you will jump out of your skin and rip someones arm off (assuming you will be holding on to someone).

Well because he retired out of the Army he will probably get the 5-7 man team. Basically what happens is there will be soldiers in their dress uniform and one will play "Taps" while the rest salute your Grandfather. Then they take the American flag laying on his casket and properly (almost ritually) fold it and present to his next of kin. It's carried out as a sign of respect for the soldier and his/her family for their service.

Sorry to hear of your loss.

What to expect: He may be in uniform, there will be a flag on his coffin, taps, a 21 gun salute. There may be military personal there to act as pall bearers. The flag will be presented to grandma or the oldest surviving child during the interment.

ETA I remember (probably since I was in the limo behind the hearse) when the police stopped the traffic (during the procession from the church to the graveyard) they would turn around and salute him as he passed. you may see that you may not depending on where in the prcession you are.

This is what I remember from my brothers funeral. I may be missing something it was 4 years ago and a sudden tragedy in our family. We were all in shock at the time so my memory is fuzzy.

They are going to have some veterans fold a flag for him and shoot in the air in his honor thats what's different.
