I really don't recommend base housing. It is a scam. Most of the houses are pretty old. And you have to ask yourself would pay your BAH to rent this place out in town? I bought a house and My BAH covers my mortgage payments. So I got a free house and when I sold it I pocketed 30 grand. If we stayed on base we wouldn't have had that opportunity. |

Hi, I'm posted out of Ft.Hood...well actually was for 3 months then hubby went to Iraq..I came home to Ga..in January we will be back in Ft.Hood..anyways to the answer..I loved living on Ft.Hood it was my first post I had ever lived on..and we have a 5 yr old..he liked being around all the kids..and we didnt have to worry about speeding cars or any crime around there..my hubby is E-4(getting pinned for E-5 in Dec. YAY!!) and they ask the rank however they say it doesnt matter...but go to housing asap..cuz it does go by junior/senior enlisted/officer and how many bedrooms per each rank needs..and you will be put in line..do it ASAP..and all you need to bring with you is a letter from your OB saying you are pregnant and they will give you that extra bedroom..and I never knew them to do inspections..but when things break they fix it..gotta love it..and as well BAH covers your house..water..trash..electricity..use as much as you would like.. I will add below the phone numbers and housing website..as well heres my email..for any questions plz ask..

You and your husband need to calculate how much BAH and the other benefits you will be getting the figure out how much you will be paying in rent. In most cases you will usually make more money living off post then on, even if its $200 thats extra cash. Plus on post housing comes with alot of regulations that must be followed. I hope this helped. |

Military housing is like any government housing project, only clean and with much less crime. What's it like? Well just imagine you've got a very nosy boss who is also your landlord....If the regulation says you are allowed 100 Christmas lights outside you'd better not have 102. |

my hubby and i have base housing and we love it. more than likely you will get a 3 bedroom if you have 2 kids or are expecting your second. and the higher your rank the nicer your housing gets. yes its true that they have certain rules that you have to follow but usually its no big deal.
on the plus side if anything breaks or needs fixed all you have to do is call the housing office and they come and fix it right away (from my expereince). i have also noticed that when you move in to housing everybody welcomes you. and it will also save you money since every thing on base is tax free and your hubbys drive to work will be shorter.
the only bad thing that i can say is what the other person said, you will have no privacy and everybody knows everything... |

The more kids you have the bigger the house. I like military housing because it keeps you close to people in the same shoes as you, the only bad thing is sometimes everyone knows your business. |

All the houses I ever got were really decent. My only problem was in San Diego, the day they showed us the house the lawn was dead, two days later after I moved in the same person sent a report to my command that I was not maintaining the lawn. A few other things that were bad, but the good outweighed it all. |

For what I have herd, Fort Hood is better than Here fort Bliss, lol... anything is better than Fort Bliss, but here they are building new houses. The good thing about military housing is that all the maintenance is taking care for you, you don't have to worry about utilities, and it is somewhat safer than living outside base. Usually your neighbors are going to similar situations and they are understanding as for outside people wouldn't. Since he is a SSG, it good because he has more opening to a better housing than if he was a Private... so, this is my opinion, oh an there are always bad things as for the stric rules of what can you have or what u cant. So look into the panpletth they give you and think about it. |

I have seen housing that is both small, old, and crowded - the other was new, 2 story, bigger, and spaced apart better.
Check to see if Fort Hood has a website about it's community. |

That's weird we qualified for an extra room everytime, when I was pregnant with our first we qualified for a two bedroom on Fort Lewis. If she had been born we would have had a three bedroom. In my experience military housing is wonderful. It also has an added safety when it concerns mothers with small children. It's less of a hassel in many ways but especially with gas, plus you don't have to get up as early to get to work and fight traffic.
As far as inspections go we have one maybe once a year, and it isn't even really an inspection. |

Personally I did not like living in base housing.
The advantage was all I had to pay for was my telephone and CATV.
The disadvantage was I could never really get away from work and relax. Onbase housing is like being a single guy living onboard a ship. Onboard, Onduty. I didn't like getting called to a working party on my day off and I sure didn't like getting called in on a non duty day because I was the guy in charge over minor stuff. |

I lived in base housing for 8 years and I found it just like living anywhere else. They did inspections, but as long as you keep things clean and undamaged you will be good. |

moving into base housing is the best thing that ever happened for us. we love it. no pressure to pay the rent or utility bills. his rank does matter since different ranks qualify for different housing and the waiting list for each group is different. i think it goes E1-E5 or E6. some bases may be different though. waiting list also depends on the number of bedrooms you need. good luck. i've never been to fort hood but i know that here at bliss, base housing was a lifesaver. |

My suggestion is to make sure you have the baby before you move into base housing. The size of the place you get will depend on how many members are IN your family not how many you are GOING to have. If you move in with 1 kid and 1 on the way you will get a 2 bedroom. If you have 2 kids you will get a 3 bedroom.
I don't know anything about Fort Hood......So on that I have no clue. Most bases have decent websites...try looking it up. It would be more reliable than an opinion.... |
