Military life and children, do they mix well?
|
I'm going in the Army this summer. I'm considering it to be a career choice and stay in my 20yrs. (My husband is also in the Army as well) I'd like to get a bid of advice about military life and children. Do they mix well and what complaints have you heard from your children? Additional Details Thanks, MM for your post. I'm over here in Germany too! Small world.

no they really don't. i could have done more and went feather in the army if i had no children. children are great, but not when you are trying to make a good career not just a career. |

My husband and I are dual military and my son loves being a brat.
Rigth now though he is only 7 and we have been stable since he has been in school.
Since he was born though we moved 2 times.
Children can adapt well to anything if the parents handle it well.
The biggest complaint I heard from parents as well as children was not being able to finish school with their friends or getting orders to move in the middle of a school year.
Luckily in the day and age it is really easy to keep in touch though.
You just have to try to keep a positive spin on everything and they will adjust just like you have too.
My husband and I both deployed and left my son for a year. He was 1 year old. At first he was hesitate to come to us. After a day or two though our bond was stronger than ever. |

Do you want the kids complaints, or ours as parents.
We are not dual military, but have dear friends that our.
One major "complaint" so to speak, is that my husband has missed many phases, and milestones that is a once in a lifetime experience with each of our children... thankfully he has not - as of yet, knock on wood, missed the same phase, age, or milestone for each child.
One major issue that my boys have is moving, with this last move, I had to list all my oldest sons schools - they totaled over 6 and he is not in high school yet. Also as they get older, the moving gets harder - leaving friends and such.
That is just a brief few.
On the flip side they have had many more experiences and life lessons at an early age! They are much more resilient then I was at there age.
In Response to Thomas - the children will make a huge impact on you - but they will not deter you from a "good" career. |

With the kids complaints there will be missed apointments or things you said you were going to do but work got in the way and the moving is hard but as a child of a family that was fairly mobile i got used to it and didnt mind it plus you will have to deal with potiential deployments the military can and will deploy both parents forcing you to put your kids in the care of a family member or a foster parent.
As far as the military life goes for me I dont like alot of it. My main issue is thoes who wear their rank and prade around like they are something special when we all need to work together. I do not like the military schools for that reason I cant stand hearing my daddy is better than you because hes a sgt and so on its almost embarasing for the military community on how some military kids act. |
