I'm confused about some things. I have read that the military encourages you to go to college while you are enlisted as active duty. How is that? How can you do military and college at the same time?

It's way too hard to do college full-time while active duty. But it is possible to do part-time, like a class or two per semester. Also, many programs are available online these days.
If you are a reservist, you could do college full-time since your drills are usually weekends, with a two-week AT in the summer. That's how I managed with law school, though I got deployed during my second year. Had to drop classes, but was able to resume without paying for those classes again once I returned from deloyment. |

It's possible. You attend on your free time or do Internet classes, etc..
It all depends on your job and your chain of command.
Combat MOS's have a much harder time attending college. |

Sure, the military supports civilian education of its enlisted personnel and has great in-service tuition benefits (100% with a cap). Service members can use their off-time to participate in face-to-face and online courses.
Most bases are host to satellite college/university campuses. Even ships (the ones that are led well) deploy with college professors.
You can get it done if you have the determination. Just do not expect to use your on-duty time to work on college courses; few have that luxury. |

Unfortunately the "College First" program was just suspended by the National Guard...but....
You can find out if the college you want to go to has an SMP (Simultaneous Membership Program) . You go through 2 years contract free in ROTC if you start as a freshman and then at your junior year you sign a military contract with the Army while you are still in ROTC.
