I have been in three of the five services, and they all were about the same. I will say that when I joined the Marine Corps as a kid, I did not have a clue of what questions I should ask. I was never lied to, but sometimes I feel like I could have been told a few more details... |

I am a recruiting offiicer. I used to be a recruiter when I was an NCO a decade ago. Young kids hear what they want to hear and any salesman will play on that, doesn't matter what they are selling.
Look at Yahoo Answers for example, some kids hoot and holler over a particular branch or job without even thinking about the upsides or downsides to their choice.
Beleive me, we do not want to put kids in who do not want to be here and no one made a person sign or raise their hand. And please remember there are always two sides to every story.
My story, this is pretty typical:
1989: 17 year old me, 97 AFQT, Civil Air Patrol Cadet for 5 years, eligible for E-3, High School Grad, every intent on going into the USAF as a Combat Controller/Para Rescue guy.
Walked on down to the Air Force office after work at Dairy Queen and low and behold the AF recruiter is not there but guess who is, the Army Recruiter (AR):
AR: Hey..what do you want to do?
Me: Well I want to be an Air Force Combat Controller.
AR: Really? We have these dudes known as Airborne Rangers and I can enlist you for that. You start off as an Infantryman, go to Airborne School, then RIP and on to a Ranger Battalion if you make it. You jump out of planes and blow stuff up.
Me: No kidding that's EXACTLY what I want to do, sign me up.
AR: Ok see you day after tommorow.
In the meantime, family and friends: Don't take the first thing he offers, explore your options (meaning medical or communications..something employable...I'm to "dumb" to realize what they mean)
Couple of days later:
Me: Hey is there any other job I'm qualified for? Like with a bonus or overseas?
AR: Yeah, I can sign you as an 11H, with a bonus and send you to Korea
Me: What's an 11H?
AR: It's an Anti Tank Infantryman, you ride in a Humvee and shoot tanks with missles
Me (ecstatic): No ****! AND Korea...sign me up now!
2 months later getting on the bus:
Me: Hey, after Korea can I still get Airborne and Ranger School?
AR: Oh yeah, you can always apply for those schools, and Korea is a hardship tour so you can pretty much get what you want after Korea.
Me: Cool
Now did he ever lie once? No. Did I hear exactly what I wanted to hear. Every word. |

They all have quotas they need to make and will mislead you any way they can without flat out lying to you. If you're set on going into the military, play them against each other, make the best deal you can for yourself and GET IT ALL IN WRITING. |
